How many times has Lewis Hamilton won the British Grand Prix?
Hamilton has won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone nine times: in 2008, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2024. His first victory came in 2008, when he started fourth and won in wet conditions, according to Formula1.com’s 2026 pre-race guide.
His 2024 victory set the nine-win mark. After crossing the line, Hamilton described the moment as the release of emotions he had been holding for a long time. BBC Sport reported that the win followed a difficult period after 2021.

How many podiums has Hamilton had at Silverstone?
Hamilton’s third place in the 2026 British Grand Prix brought his Silverstone podium total to 16. That is not the same statistic as British Grand Prix wins: a podium is any first-, second- or third-place finish in a race held at the circuit.
The distinction matters because Silverstone hosted a separate 2020 event, the 70th Anniversary Grand Prix. Hamilton also finished on the podium in that race, but it was not a British Grand Prix victory. BBC Sport notes the separate event in its account of his Silverstone record.

What happened in the 2026 British Grand Prix?
The race took place at Silverstone on 5 July 2026, within the 3–5 July Grand Prix weekend. Charles Leclerc won for Ferrari, George Russell finished second and Hamilton was third for Ferrari. The result added another podium to Hamilton’s circuit total, rather than another British Grand Prix win.
According to the FIA race report, Leclerc passed pole-sitter Kimi Antonelli at the start. Hamilton moved into second before Antonelli passed him. In the FIA’s post-race press conference, Hamilton called the race difficult, citing a start issue and car-balance problems; when asked about the record, he praised Leclerc’s performance. The FIA transcript identifies the podium as Hamilton’s 16th at Silverstone.

Why the “on cusp” wording is out of date
Hamilton had already reached nine British Grand Prix wins at Silverstone in 2024. The 2026 result did not make that total ten; it raised his separate Silverstone podium count from 15, as reported by BBC Sport in 2025, to 16. Silverstone’s 2026 account confirms the updated podium figure.
Silverstone has also marked Hamilton’s place in its history: in 2025, BBC Sport reported that the British Racing Drivers’ Club had renamed the pits straight in recognition of his achievements.
