Hamilton supported the athletes’ right to protest, but said he had no plans to kneel at that year’s U.S. Grand Prix. The original caption, exact video contents and deletion time are not established by the available contemporary reports.
What did Lewis Hamilton post about Donald Trump?
Contemporary coverage described a now-deleted Instagram video involving a doll of President Donald Trump. The video was part of Hamilton’s social-media activity during the NFL anthem-protest controversy, alongside posts supporting the protests, including material connected to Martin Luther King Jr. and the #takeaknee movement. The reports do not establish the complete video or its original caption, so descriptions of its precise message should be treated cautiously. [c2]
The episode unfolded during the Malaysian Grand Prix weekend and drew attention to Hamilton’s use of social media as well as the political controversy itself. [c7]
Why was the video deleted?
Contemporary reporting attributed to Hamilton the view that he would not have deleted the video. Coverage also suggested Instagram may not have been the right channel for the post. However, the available reports do not provide a complete first-person explanation from Hamilton, nor do they establish who removed the post or when. It is therefore not possible to say definitively why it disappeared. [c4]

What was the NFL kneeling protest about?
NFL players knelt during the U.S. national anthem to draw attention to racial inequality and police brutality. Colin Kaepernick became the most prominent early figure associated with the gesture. President Trump’s condemnation of players who protested—including his call for team owners to fire them—broadened the dispute and brought more athletes and public figures into the debate. [c5]
Sky Sports reported that almost 200 NFL players protested during Week 3 of the 2017 season; its account also noted that some players remained in their locker rooms during the anthem. That is the figure reported by Sky Sports, not a separately verified count here. [c6]

Did Lewis Hamilton plan to take a knee at the U.S. Grand Prix?
No. Asked whether he would kneel during the anthem at the 2017 U.S. Grand Prix, Hamilton said, “I don’t really have a position and I don’t have any plans [to do so].” ESPN reported that he said his focus was on winning. [c3] [c8]
That answer is distinct from his support for NFL players’ right to protest. Supporting their choice did not mean he announced that he would make the same gesture at a Formula One race. [c1]
