Use the slowest charging option that reliably replaces the energy you need before your next drive. Level 1 can be enough for modest daily mileage and long parking periods; Level 2 is a faster option for regular home or workplace charging; DC fast charging is most useful when time is short, particularly on a trip. The charger’s advertised power is only part of the equation: the vehicle, battery state, temperature, connector and available equipment all affect charging speed.
How the three charging options compare
| Charging type | Typical power and setting | Estimated range added | Broad BEV charging-time estimate | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Level 1 | 120 V AC; typical output around 1 kW. A typical U.S. household outlet can be used with a suitable cordset. | About 2–5 miles per hour of charging, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). | About 40–50+ hours from empty to 80%, per DOT. | Low daily mileage and long parking periods. |
| Level 2 | AC charging, typically 240 V at home or 208 V in commercial settings. DOT lists typical output of 7–19 kW. | About 10–20 miles per hour per DOT; the U.S. Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center (AFDC) gives a broader 10–30 miles per hour estimate. | About 4–10 hours from empty to 80%, per DOT. | Regular home or workplace charging when Level 1 is too slow. |
| DC fast charging | Public direct-current charging stations; DOT lists 50–350 kW. | Not stated in the cited DOT and AFDC estimates as a consistent miles-per-hour figure; actual rate varies substantially by vehicle and conditions. | About 20 minutes to 1 hour from empty to 80%, per DOT. | Short stops, travel corridors and drivers without home charging. |
These are broad U.S. estimates, not promises for every vehicle or session. For example, the DOT’s Level 2 range estimate is narrower than AFDC’s consumer-guide range, reflecting differences in vehicles and charging equipment. A plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) may have different capabilities from a battery-electric vehicle (BEV); most PHEVs currently on the market do not support DC fast charging. See the DOT charging-speed guide and AFDC’s electricity infrastructure overview.
Level 1: when a household outlet is enough
Level 1 uses 120 V AC, typically from a U.S. household outlet, and is the slowest of the three options. DOT estimates around 1 kW of typical output and roughly 2–5 miles of range added per charging hour. Its broad estimate for charging a BEV from empty to 80% is 40–50 or more hours.
That speed can still work if you drive relatively few miles and the vehicle is parked and plugged in for many hours. It may not replenish a heavily used BEV overnight. AFDC says EVs come with a Level 1 cordset for a standard household outlet, so check what came with the vehicle before buying another. Follow the vehicle maker’s instructions and use suitable electrical equipment. AFDC and the DOE Loan Programs Office describe Level 1 as the least expensive and easiest home charging option to install.

Level 2: the practical middle ground for regular charging
Level 2 is faster AC charging. It typically uses 240 V in a residence and 208 V in commercial settings. DOT lists a typical output of 7–19 kW, roughly 10–20 miles of range per charging hour, and an estimated 4–10 hours for a BEV to go from empty to 80%. AFDC gives a broader estimate of 10–30 miles per hour, so treat either figure as a guide rather than a vehicle-specific prediction.
At home, Level 2 requires appropriate 240 V electrical service and may require installation work. It is also common at workplaces and public charging locations. It is often a good choice when you need more overnight replenishment than Level 1 provides, or when a workday stop gives the car time to charge. Before arranging a home installation, check the vehicle’s accepted charging rate, connector, circuit requirements and local electrical requirements. DOE describes Level 2 as faster than Level 1 but more expensive to install; actual installation costs vary by home and location. See the DOE home-charging guide.

DC fast charging: when a shorter stop matters
DC fast chargers deliver direct current at public charging stations. DOT lists typical power outputs from 50 to 350 kW and estimates around 20 minutes to 1 hour to charge a BEV from empty to 80%. This option is especially useful on travel corridors, during short stops, or for drivers who cannot charge at home.
A station’s maximum output does not mean your car will charge at that rate throughout the session. The vehicle’s limits and charging curve, among other factors, determine the power it can accept. DOT notes that it may be more time- and cost-efficient on a trip to charge to around 80% and continue, but the best stopping point depends on the vehicle, route and conditions. Public DC fast charging also has the highest infrastructure cost of the three options; the price of a particular session depends on the network and location. See AFDC’s charging infrastructure overview.

Choose based on your next drive, not the headline charging rate
- Estimate the energy you need. Start with your ordinary daily driving, then use your vehicle’s efficiency and charging guidance to estimate the energy required before the next trip. Published miles-per-hour figures are general ranges, not guaranteed rates for your car.
- Match charging to parking time. A long overnight or workday parking period may make Level 1 or Level 2 practical. A short stop is where DC fast charging’s speed can be valuable.
- Account for where you can plug in. Home or workplace access often makes AC charging convenient. Drivers without home charging may combine public Level 2 charging, when they can leave the vehicle parked, with DC fast charging when they need a quicker stop.
- Check vehicle and connector compatibility. The vehicle sets its maximum charging rate and supported inlet. AFDC identifies J1772 and, on supported vehicles and equipment, NACS for Level 1 and Level 2 AC charging; public DC fast charging may use CCS, CHAdeMO or NACS. Check the exact vehicle and station, including network access, before relying on a connector or adapter.
- Compare the real cost and installation needs. Level 1 generally has the lowest home-installation burden; Level 2 can require suitable 240 V service and electrical work; DC fast charging relies on public infrastructure. Home installation costs and public session prices are local and time-sensitive, so check current utility, installer and charging-network information rather than assuming a national price.
A simple starting point: use Level 1 if it reliably covers your usual driving, move to Level 2 if it does not, and use DC fast charging when a short stop or route makes the time savings worthwhile. A DOE summary of a 2023 National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) study estimated that 64% of EV charging took place at single-family homes using Level 1 and Level 2; this is a modeled estimate, not a current measured share. The same study projected Level 1 and Level 2 would serve 80% of EV charging duties by 2030, with its DC fast charging case defined as 150 kW or higher. DOE’s 2024 summary of the NREL study gives those figures.
Why actual charging speed varies
Charging rates change during a session and differ across vehicles. DOT identifies battery state of charge, battery deterioration, power the vehicle uses while charging, ambient temperature and charging-equipment power as factors. The car’s own maximum acceptance rate and charging curve also limit how much power it can draw; a charger’s advertised maximum is not a sustained-speed guarantee.

DOE reported data from 2,369,315 DC fast-charging sessions in the Energetics EVWATTS Dashboard for June 30, 2020, through June 30, 2023. In that dataset, paid sessions averaged 42 minutes and 22.0 kWh, while free sessions averaged 78 minutes and 40.7 kWh. These are averages from the covered sessions, not predictions for an individual driver or every charging network. The dataset was self-selected and excluded Tesla Supercharger sessions. DOE’s 2023 summary of the EVWATTS data explains the coverage and figures.

Does DC fast charging damage the battery?
The federal guidance cited here describes charging speeds, use cases and factors that affect charging time; it does not establish a universal battery-longevity comparison between Level 1, Level 2 and DC fast charging. Avoid assuming that one charging level is always harmful or harmless. For guidance on your vehicle’s battery and charging habits, follow its manufacturer’s instructions.
