Among 2024 full-size, non-hybrid SUVs, the Chevrolet Tahoe 2WD with the 3.0L Duramax diesel has the strongest fuel-economy rating in the cited comparison: 24 mpg combined, or 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway. Its 4WD counterpart is rated 22 mpg combined. Include hybrids and smaller three-row SUVs, however, and the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid reaches 36 mpg combined in one listed configuration—though it is not a like-for-like full-size comparison.
Which 2024 full-size SUV gets the best gas mileage?
The 2024 Chevrolet Tahoe 2WD with the 3.0L Duramax diesel leads the full-size, non-hybrid comparison at 24 mpg combined. The rating is from the U.S. EPA and Department of Energy’s 2024 Fuel Economy Guide; Edmunds also identified the Tahoe as its full-size non-hybrid pick in a 2024 comparison.
That figure is for a specific engine and drivetrain, not every Tahoe. The 4WD diesel is rated at 22 mpg combined. If you are comparing listings, check the fuel type, engine, and drive layout rather than relying on the model name alone.
2024 large-SUV fuel-economy comparison
The figures below are EPA/DOE ratings from the 2024 Fuel Economy Guide. City and highway values are shown as city/highway; “combined” is the most useful single figure for a quick comparison across mixed driving.

|---|---|---|

| Chevrolet Tahoe 4WD, 3.0L diesel | 22 mpg | 20/26 mpg |
| Chevrolet Suburban 2WD, 3.0L diesel | 23 mpg | 21/27 mpg |
| GMC Yukon 2WD, 3.0L diesel | 23 mpg | 21/27 mpg |
| GMC Yukon XL 2WD, 3.0L diesel | 23 mpg | 21/27 mpg |
The Suburban and Yukon XL are longer full-size alternatives, while the Yukon is closely related to the Tahoe. In this set of diesel 2WD configurations, each is rated one combined mpg below the Tahoe.
What if a three-row hybrid counts as a large SUV?
If “large” means a roomy three-row SUV rather than a traditional full-size model, the 2024 Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid is a notable alternative. The Fuel Economy Guide lists one configuration at 36 mpg combined (37 city/34 highway); its AWD hybrid versions are listed at 27 or 34 mpg combined. These are hybrid ratings, so they should be considered separately from the diesel full-size SUVs rather than treated as direct equivalents.

Why “large SUV” can mean different things
There is no single universal EPA category named “large SUV.” The 2024 Fuel Economy Guide uses the truck grouping “standard sport utility vehicles,” defined by gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of 6,000–9,999 pounds. The EPA’s Automotive Trends report uses a separate regulatory breakdown into car SUVs and truck SUVs; factors such as four-wheel drive or vehicle weight generally place an SUV in the truck-SUV group. Because those systems classify vehicles differently, this article uses “full-size” in the everyday vehicle-comparison sense and identifies the specific models and configurations being compared.
How to use the MPG ratings
- Start with combined MPG. It provides a single estimate for comparing mixed city and highway driving. Use the city or highway number if your driving is heavily concentrated in one type.
- Match the configuration. Engine and drivetrain affect the rating: the Tahoe diesel’s 2WD and 4WD versions differ by 2 mpg combined.
- Check the official label for the exact vehicle. The EPA’s Fuel Economy Label guide explains how to read the label and find the configuration-specific estimate.
The EPA and DOE say the ratings are useful for comparisons because vehicles are tested in the same way under the same conditions, but they may not predict the fuel economy an individual driver will get. Driving behavior, cold weather, idling, load, tire pressure, and terrain can all affect actual mileage.

How these ratings compare with broader averages
For context, the EPA reports a 25.7 mpg real-world average for truck SUVs in model year 2024 in its Automotive Trends highlights. That is a category-wide average, not a ranking of full-size models or a prediction for an individual vehicle. The report’s 27.2 mpg average for all new model-year 2024 vehicles covers the whole new-vehicle fleet, not just SUVs.
