Land Rover’s global comparison page lists both the Velar and Defender 90 as five-seat SUVs. It gives the Velar more length and more cargo capacity behind the seats, while the Defender’s published maximum wading-depth figures are higher. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.

Land Rover says its luggage figures use dry VDA-block measurements. Its comparison page notes that the vehicles shown are from the global range and that specifications, options and availability vary by market; it also identifies the figures as official EU test figures and cautions that real-world results may differ. Which is bigger, and which has more boot space?
In this direct comparison, the Velar is 48 cm longer than the Defender 90. It also has 255 L more published luggage capacity with the seats unfolded. With the seats folded, the difference narrows to 95 L in the Velar’s favor.

Those cargo figures apply only to the Defender 90 comparison. They should not be carried over to the 110 or 130, whose body styles and layouts differ. If space is your deciding factor, check the exact model and local-market specification, then consider the shape of the load area and the items you need to carry—not just the headline volume.
Is the Defender better off road?
Land Rover’s published maximum wading-depth specifications favor the Defender. The figures vary with suspension, and wading depth is a limit stated by the manufacturer, not a safe target for a crossing.

Land Rover also lists terrain systems and a twin-speed transfer box among the Defender’s capability equipment, but the exact equipment depends on trim and market. A higher wading-depth rating does not make a water crossing safe: conditions can change, and the published maximum is not a substitute for assessing water, route and vehicle setup. Check the manual and local specification before attempting any crossing. Land Rover’s wading-depth guidance provides the manufacturer’s figures.

Choose a Velar if everyday space and refinement are priorities
- You want the longer vehicle and the higher seats-up cargo figure in the published Velar-versus-Defender-90 comparison.
- You are drawn to Land Rover’s positioning of the Velar around refinement and comfort. This is manufacturer positioning, not a substitute for a test drive or independent ride assessment.
Choose a Defender if capability or body-style choice matters more
- You need a vehicle from the Defender family’s distinct 90, 110, 130 or Hard Top variants.
- You prioritize the Defender’s higher published wading-depth limits or its listed terrain equipment, while confirming the exact equipment on the version sold in your market.
Compare the exact version before deciding
Start by identifying the Defender body style, then compare like-for-like local model years, trims and suspension. Land Rover’s current global comparison warns that specifications, options and availability vary by market, so its page cannot establish what is offered or priced where you live. The Velar technical specification available from Land Rover is titled 2024 and cannot establish the 2026 powertrain lineup. For current powertrains, prices, taxes, warranties and equipment, consult the local configurator or retailer.
