Factory driver Marco Mapelli was behind the wheel. That is a historical claim, not confirmation that the SVJ holds the record today.
Which Lamborghini set the record, and what was its time?
The car was the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ. In its 26 July 2018 announcement, Lamborghini reported a Nordschleife lap of 6:44.97 minutes and described the result as a production-car record. The company named factory driver Marco Mapelli as the driver.
Lamborghini’s release described the circuit as 20.6 km long. The Nürburgring’s current record-procedure page specifies a 20.832-kilometre Nordschleife lap. These are figures from different sources and contexts, so they should not be silently treated as the same course-length measurement.
What did “SVJ” mean?
Explaining the Jota suffix, then-chairman and CEO Stefano Domenicali said: “The Aventador SVJ takes the Jota suffix, following the Lamborghini tradition for denoting a car’s track-focused talent.” This is Lamborghini’s explanation of its naming tradition, rather than an independent assessment of the car’s performance.

Does the Aventador SVJ still hold the record?
The 2018 announcement establishes what Lamborghini claimed at the time; it does not establish the SVJ as the current record holder. The Nürburgring says it has officially recorded, confirmed and published lap records since the 2019 season. Its current procedure covers a flying-start lap of the full 20.832-kilometre Nordschleife, calibrated timing, notary supervision, and vehicle inspection and documentation. The circuit operator classifies cars using German Federal Motor Transport Authority categories.
That framework postdates Lamborghini’s announcement. The available information does not establish that the SVJ’s 2018 run was documented under today’s procedure, so the 2018 result should be described in its historical context rather than as a current official record.

How should the lap be compared with other Nürburgring times?
Nordschleife times are meaningful to compare only when the important conditions align. Check the course length, start and timing method, vehicle category, and whether the vehicle was a production model, prototype or specially classified entry. The Nürburgring’s current records are category-specific, not one universal leaderboard.
