There is no separate carmaker called KN behind the familiar “KN” badge. The mark is Kia’s redesigned logo, unveiled on January 6, 2021. Its connected, angular lettering can look like “KN” at a glance, but Kia identifies it as its logo.
Why does Kia’s logo look like “KN”?
Kia’s current mark uses stylized, connected letters rather than the clearly separated lettering of a conventional wordmark. The joined strokes and angular shapes make the intended “KIA” harder to parse quickly; some viewers interpret the final shape as an N and read the whole mark as “KN.” That is a visual misreading, not evidence of another automaker or a change to Kia’s name.
Kia introduced the redesigned corporate logo on January 6, 2021, together with the global slogan “Movement that inspires.” Kia’s announcement described the mark as resembling a handwritten signature. The company said the unbroken line conveys its commitment to bringing moments of inspiration, symmetry demonstrates confidence, and the rising gestures represent ambition. Those are Kia’s stated design meanings, not independent findings about how viewers experience the logo.
How common is the “KN” reading?
In a survey reported by REREV in 2022, 1,062 participants were shown the logo and asked which letters they saw. REREV reported that 56% correctly identified “KIA,” while 44% did not; 26% answered “KN,” the most frequent mistaken reading. These figures describe that publisher’s survey participants, not all drivers or a representative global population. REREV’s survey report does not establish a universal recognition rate.

The phrase “KN car” is therefore best understood as a search description for Kia’s badge. REREV also published estimates for related search terms, but the report does not establish the keyword tool, geography, or measurement date, so those estimates should not be treated as verified Google search volumes.

Kia presented the new identity as part of a broader transformation, not as a renaming. In the January 6, 2021 announcement, Kia President and CEO Ho Sung Song said: “Kia’s new logo represents the company’s commitment to becoming an icon for change and innovation”. The release does not say the company intended people to read the badge as “KN.”
