The 6 starts at $27,990 and has a listed base dry weight of 830 lb; the 8 starts at $47,990 and weighs 1,125 lb before gear, according to Kimbo. The 8 adds a wet bath, a queen cabover bed and higher-rated insulation. Both can be configured with an optional Dickinson Marine heater, but neither heater is standard on every build.
The “fire-warmed ski cabin” image comes from the original Kimbo 6 launch coverage in 2019. It is useful shorthand for an insulated aluminum camper with an optional heater, not a description of an open fire or a guarantee of four-season performance. Kimbo’s current lineup and prices are different from those launch-era details.
What are the Kimbo 6 and Kimbo 8?
Kimbo builds slide-in truck campers with a hard aluminum shell. Its current lineup includes two sizes: the Kimbo 6, intended for midsize pickups, and the Kimbo 8, intended for full-size trucks. Kimbo describes the shell as a frameless, hand-riveted 5052 aluminum monocoque, with 0.1-inch panels and rigid-foam insulation attached to each panel. Those are manufacturer descriptions, not independent durability or cold-weather test results. Kimbo’s current listings provide the buying specifications and fit guidance.
The model names reflect the truck-bed class the campers are designed around, but a truck’s name alone does not establish fit. Cab, drivetrain, options, bed length and payload rating all matter; compare the specific truck’s payload sticker and configuration with the camper and everything you plan to carry.

Prices and specifications are Kimbo’s current published figures; options, taxes, delivery and configuration may affect the amount a buyer pays. Dry weight is not the camper’s ready-to-travel weight: passengers, water, propane, accessories and cargo add load.
Choose the Kimbo 6 for a lighter, simpler setup
The Kimbo 6 is the smaller, lower-priced option and is listed for midsize pickups including the Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado, Gladiator and Frontier. Its 830-lb base dry weight is a starting point for payload calculations, not a promise that every midsize truck can carry a finished, loaded camper. Kimbo lists R5 insulation and an optional propane heater upgrade. Buyers prioritizing a wet bath or more insulation should compare the 8’s configuration rather than assume those features are included in the 6.

- FULL SIZE Truck Bed Mattress: Our air mattress is specifically designed to snugly fit 5.5' to 5.8' full-size pickup truck beds. It is NOT compatible with midsize truck beds. Please ensure your truck bed measures between 5.5 and 5.8 feet for a perfect fit before making a purchase.
- High-Quality Materials: Our inflatable truck bed air mattress features a plush, soft-flocked top surface for maximum comfort, a durable PVC construction for reliable support, and an upgraded 2026 extra-thick 210T grid fabric on the bottom to prevent punctures and air leakage, ensuring enhanced durability and long-lasting performance.
- Heavy Weight Capacity: Designed with multiple internal wave straps, this air mattress can support up to 260 kilograms (600 lbs), comfortably accommodating 2-3 people at once. Its robust construction ensures exceptional durability and reliable performance for extended use.
- Abundant Accessories: The package includes an electric air pump, a 1.8-meter power cable to connect to your truck’s cigarette lighter socket, multiple repair patches for convenience, and a handy storage bag for easy transport and storage.
- Don’t Rush to Return!: When first using the air mattress, you may think it’s leaking due to the stretching caused by the air pressure. Simply inflate the mattress fully again to allow it to expand. Repeat this process for 2-3 nights until the mattress fully inflates and settles into its final shape.
Choose the Kimbo 8 for a bathroom and larger sleeping layout
The Kimbo 8 is listed for full-size platforms such as the Tundra, F-150, Silverado, Sierra and Ram. It adds a dedicated wet bath and queen cabover bed, has an R10 insulation rating, and starts at a higher price and weight. Kimbo offers optional factory-installed Dickinson Marine propane or diesel heaters for this model. Kimbo says an 8-foot bed is needed for the tailgate to close; on a 6.5-foot bed, the tailgate remains down.
Will a Kimbo camper fit your pickup?
Start with the truck’s actual payload rating, not just the model name or the camper’s dry weight. Payload is the capacity available for occupants and cargo, and a camper uses part of it before you add trip supplies. Check the truck’s door-jamb payload label and consult the owner’s manual for relevant limits. Then account for the camper as configured, occupants, water, propane, batteries, accessories and luggage. Kimbo itself advises buyers to check payload.

- Confirm the exact truck configuration. Record model year, cab, drivetrain, bed length and the payload rating shown on the vehicle.
- Ask Kimbo for the configured camper weight. The published base dry weight does not include all options or travel cargo.
- Check bed and tailgate requirements. For the Kimbo 8, Kimbo specifies an 8-foot bed to close the tailgate; a 6.5-foot bed leaves it down.
- Evaluate loaded capacity and fitment. Include people and all gear, and ask a qualified truck or camper professional about any setup whose limits or compatibility are unclear.
Kimbo lists example truck families, but that list is not a fitment certification for every trim or year. Do not assume a vehicle is suitable until its payload and the camper’s completed configuration have been checked.

The heater is an optional installed appliance, not an open fire. Kimbo describes an exterior-vented Dickinson Marine propane heater option for the 6 and propane or diesel choices for the 8. Its Kimbo 6 listing describes a weatherproof chimney and safety system. Heater type and installation depend on model and build; confirm what is included in the specific quote.

Kimbo publishes insulation ratings of R5 for the 6 and R10 for the 8. Those ratings and the availability of a heater do not, by themselves, establish how comfortable or safe a camper will be in a particular winter climate. The reviewed manufacturer materials do not provide independent cold-weather test results or a universal four-season guarantee. Ask Kimbo about the exact build, ventilation, water-system precautions and operating limits for the conditions you expect.
What is known about the original Kimbo camper?
The 2019 New Atlas article introduced the original Kimbo 6 as a lightweight, aluminum-skinned slide-in camper and reported launch-era pricing of $14,999 for a base camper and $25,999 fully optioned. Those are historical figures for the original 6 series, not current buying prices. The article also reported that the company put more than 30,000 miles on prototypes during development; that is a reported prototype-history figure, not an independent road test of today’s models. New Atlas’s 2019 launch coverage provides that historical context.
Kimbo’s press page reports more than 600 campers delivered since 2016. That is a company-reported total, not an independently audited count. Kimbo’s press page is the source for the company’s figure.
Which Kimbo should you consider?
The decision mostly turns on truck capacity, desired amenities and budget. The 6 is the lower-weight, lower-starting-price option for a compatible midsize pickup; the 8 is intended for full-size trucks and adds the wet bath, queen cabover and R10 insulation. Neither is the better choice for every buyer: first establish that your particular truck can carry the finished setup, then decide whether the 8’s additional space and amenities are worth its extra weight and price.
