Yes—Kia Norway ran a local campaign in February 2025 featuring a Kia EV3 and the line “I bought this after Elon went crazy.” The joke turned a phrase associated with some Tesla owners into a jab at the rival brand. But it was not an official global Kia position: Kia Corporation later said the post was an independent local initiative, and the post was removed.
What Kia Norway’s ad said
The social creative showed the rear of a Kia EV3 with the bumper-sticker-style line “I bought this after Elon went crazy.” Kia Norway also used the campaign idea in outdoor advertising. A related Finnish newspaper ad made a more indirect reference to Elon Musk, according to Norwegian trade coverage.
The line riffed on “I bought this before Elon went crazy,” a phrase reported as appearing on stickers used by some Tesla owners who wanted to distance themselves from Musk. Kia’s version switched “before” to “after” and placed the joke on an EV from Tesla’s competitor. InsideEVs and Kreativt Forum described the slogan and campaign context.
Who made it—and what Kia said afterward
Norwegian agency Per Høj created the work. Its creative leads, Øyvind Waage and Mads Rønold, told Kreativt Forum the idea was intended as a joke about a phrase they were seeing widely, not as an agenda against Tesla or Musk. The Norwegian-language quote was: “Det er ikke noen form for agenda mot Tesla eller Musk, men bare et forsøk på en artig kommentar til noe man ser overalt om dagen.” In translation: “There is no kind of agenda against Tesla or Musk, just an attempt at a humorous comment on something you see everywhere these days.”

After the post drew wider attention, Kia Corporation told AFP, as reported by Creative Bloq, that “The post was an entirely independent local initiative that does not reflect the position of Kia Europe or Kia Corporation.” The post was removed. Norwegian trade reporting also said the campaign had not been approved by Kia, so it should not be presented as a corporate-endorsed Kia campaign.
What the coverage does—and does not—show
Contemporary reports noted online attention and criticism from some Tesla supporters, including investor Sawyer Merritt. That establishes a visible reaction, not a representative measure of public opinion. The coverage does not provide verified figures for reach, impressions, campaign spend, EV3 sales, or any measurable business effect; attention alone is not evidence that the ad drove purchases.
