The latest official U.S. 5-Door model-year information found here is for 2023. Kia’s figures show a small hatch with EPA-estimated fuel economy of 32 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined, plus up to 32.8 cubic feet of cargo space with the rear seats folded. Those are manufacturer specifications—not independent test results—and details vary by model year.
What “Kia Rio5” means
Kia used “Rio5” for the hatchback in its 2011 U.S. announcement. Later materials use “Rio 5-Door.” The name can refer to different generations and model years, so equipment, dimensions, powertrain specifications, and prices should be checked against the year and trim of the car being considered. Kia’s official 2023 materials cover the sixth-generation U.S. Rio and its 5-Door model.

Kia’s 2023 overview describes the Rio as largely a carryover for that model year. These numbers give a useful sense of its compact footprint and hatchback layout; they do not establish acceleration, ride comfort, cabin noise, or performance on rough roads.

Pricing: historical MSRP, not today’s used value
Kia’s published 2023 launch information contains a price discrepancy for the S 5-Door. The model-year release lists $17,490 MSRP before a $1,155 destination charge, while Kia’s detailed 2023 pricing page lists $17,690. Kia also notes that dealer selling prices may vary. These are historical new-car prices, not current used-car valuations or asking prices.
For comparison, Kia’s 2022 release listed the Rio 5-Door S at $17,190 before a $1,055 destination charge. That year’s published figures were 120 hp, 112 lb-ft, and estimated fuel economy of 33 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined. Model-year figures should not be blended: the 2022 city estimate differs from the 2023 figure.
Safety equipment: standard versus optional
Kia listed electronic stability control, vehicle stability management, and hill-start assist as standard across 2023 Rio trims. The following driver-assistance features were optional through the S Technology Package, rather than standard on every S:

Confirm equipment on the individual car’s window sticker or other vehicle-specific documentation. This equipment list is not a crash-test rating. A crash-test result or recall status for a particular vehicle is not established here; consult an authoritative safety source for ratings and check the VIN through the relevant official recall service before purchase.
What the specs can—and cannot—tell you
The documented strengths of the 2023 Rio 5-Door are its compact exterior dimensions, manufacturer-estimated fuel economy, and flexible hatchback cargo area. The 120-hp rating describes engine output, but by itself does not establish real-world acceleration or driving feel. Likewise, the listed 5.5-inch ground clearance is not evidence that the car is suitable for rough roads.
No independent instrumented road test or long-term reliability evidence is established here. A review should not treat manufacturer specifications as proof of ride quality, durability, ownership costs, safety performance, or resale value.

What to check when shopping for a used Rio5
There is no current used-price range established here. Compare listings for the same model year and generation, body style, and trim rather than using a historical MSRP as a substitute for market value. A practical comparison should account for:
- Model year and generation, since specifications and equipment change
- Hatchback versus sedan body style
- Asking price alongside mileage, condition, and maintenance history
- Fuel economy and powertrain specifications for that exact year
- Cargo capacity and whether the rear-seat configuration suits your needs
- Which driver-assistance features are actually installed
- VIN-based recall status and authoritative crash-test information
Inspect the specific car and review its maintenance records; the model name alone cannot establish the condition of a used vehicle.
Photos: match the image to the model year
Rio styling and equipment vary across generations. Cars.com’s Rio5 research listing provides model-year browsing and photo galleries. Choose images labeled for the specific model year and generation being discussed; a generic Rio photograph may show details that do not apply to the 2023 5-Door.
