The Kia Sportage PHEV is worth choosing when its local price is lower or its advertised electric range better matches your commute. Neither is the right choice for everyone: charging access, model year, trim, incentives and dealer pricing can change the value equation.
How do the Sportage PHEV and Tucson PHEV compare?
The published figures favor the Sportage on advertised electric range, while the Tucson has more complete published efficiency and test data. The available independent evaluation is for the Tucson, so it does not establish a real-world efficiency advantage over the Kia.
| Model and source | Electric range | Efficiency or power | Charging and price |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Hyundai Tucson PHEV; Hyundai | 32 miles, manufacturer-listed all-electric range | 77 combined MPGe and 268 combined horsepower, as listed by Hyundai | Not stated in the cited Hyundai figures |
| 2026 Hyundai Tucson PHEV; Hyundai | 32 miles, manufacturer-listed all-electric range | 80 combined MPGe, as listed by Hyundai | Not stated in the cited Hyundai figures |
| Kia Sportage PHEV; Kia brochure search result | Estimated 34 miles all-electric | Not stated in the cited Kia brochure result | About two hours to recharge on Level 2 equipment, according to Kia |
| 2026 Hyundai Tucson PHEV; AP evaluation using Edmunds data | 29 electric miles in that evaluation | 37 mpg combined in hybrid mode in that evaluation | About two hours on Level 2; $41,675 starting price reported in the 2026 evaluation |
| 2025 Kia Sportage PHEV; Cars.com comparison | Not stated in the cited comparison | Not stated in the cited comparison | Starting MSRP around $39,890; destination, trim and market conditions affect actual prices |
These figures are not a same-year, same-method head-to-head test. Hyundai’s 32-mile figure is a manufacturer-listed range; Kia’s 34-mile figure is an estimate in a brochure search result; AP’s 29-mile result comes from its 2026 Tucson evaluation. Treat estimates as a basis for comparison, not a promise of the distance you will achieve.
Which one has more electric range?
Sportage: the higher advertised figure
Kia’s brochure search result estimates 34 all-electric miles for the Sportage PHEV, two miles more than Hyundai lists for either the 2025 or 2026 Tucson PHEV. That small advertised edge may matter if your daily route is close to the vehicles’ stated ranges, but it does not show that the Kia will travel farther in a particular owner’s conditions.

Tucson: the clearer independent result
For the 2026 Tucson, AP’s evaluation using Edmunds data recorded 29 electric miles. That is a result from a particular evaluation, not a guarantee for every trip or driver. The available figures do not provide a comparable independent Sportage test, so it would be misleading to call one the real-world range winner.
Cold weather, speed, terrain, climate-control use and driving style can affect how far a plug-in hybrid travels electrically. Plan around your actual route and leave a margin rather than assuming the advertised range will always cover it.

What happens after the battery’s electric range is used?
A plug-in hybrid can continue using its gasoline engine after its electric driving range is spent, but its operating cost and fuel economy then depend on hybrid-mode efficiency and conditions. AP’s 2026 Tucson evaluation reported 37 mpg combined in hybrid mode. The cited material does not provide an equivalent Sportage result, so there is no sound basis here for ranking the two on depleted-battery fuel economy.
That distinction matters if you routinely take long trips or cannot charge between commutes. The Associated Press notes that plug-in hybrids can be heavier, more expensive and less efficient than conventional hybrids once their batteries are depleted. A conventional hybrid may therefore make more sense if you expect to drive mostly on gasoline.

Which is the better value?
The available starting-price examples are for different model years and sources: Cars.com puts the 2025 Sportage PHEV’s starting MSRP at around $39,890, while AP’s 2026 Tucson evaluation reports a $41,675 starting price. Those figures do not establish a like-for-like price difference between current vehicles. Trim, destination charges, dealer discounts, incentives and ZIP code can change what you actually pay.
Compare the exact model year and trim you can buy, using the out-the-door quote rather than a headline starting price. Then check current federal and state incentives for your location; eligibility and availability require a buyer-specific lookup. If the Sportage is meaningfully cheaper after those adjustments, its advertised range makes it a credible value choice. If the gap is small, decide whether the Tucson’s comfort and technology advantages are worth paying for.

Why might the Tucson be the better everyday SUV?
The decision summary for these models favors the Tucson for comfort, cabin technology, reclining rear seats and driver assistance. These are practical differentiators for buyers who regularly carry passengers or spend a lot of time in the cabin. The independent Tucson evaluation adds a documented electric-range and hybrid-mode result that is not available here for a like-for-like Sportage comparison.
That does not make the Tucson universally better. The evidence here does not establish a detailed trim-by-trim equipment comparison, cargo-volume winner or warranty advantage. Check the exact vehicles’ window stickers and current manufacturer warranty terms before treating any feature or ownership-cost difference as settled.

Can you charge either PHEV at home?
Both are plug-in hybrids, and the cited information gives an approximate Level 2 recharge time of about two hours for the Sportage and for the Tucson in AP’s 2026 evaluation. Actual charging time depends on the vehicle, charging equipment and conditions; the cited figures are not a promise for every home setup.
Before buying, confirm the connector and charging requirements for the exact model year, whether your home has a suitable circuit, and the cost of any electrical work. If you cannot charge at home, consider whether you have reliable charging elsewhere. A PHEV’s electric-driving benefit is greatest when you can charge regularly.
Which one should you buy?
Choose the Tucson PHEV if
- You prioritize comfort, cabin technology, reclining rear seats or driver-assistance features.
- You want a published independent evaluation of electric range and hybrid-mode fuel economy, while recognizing that it is not a Sportage head-to-head test.
- The Tucson’s actual price after trim, destination charges and incentives is competitive with the Sportage you are considering.
Choose the Sportage PHEV if
- Your local Sportage quote is lower enough to matter after comparing equivalent model years, trims and fees.
- Kia’s estimated 34-mile electric range is a better fit for your regular route than the Tucson’s listed 32 miles.
- You prefer the Kia’s styling or equipment mix after inspecting the specific trim in person.
Consider a conventional hybrid instead if
- You cannot charge regularly and expect to use the gasoline engine for most driving.
- Your commute or daily routes regularly exceed the electric range and charging between trips is impractical.
Edmunds contributor Dan Frio, in an Associated Press article, describes plug-in hybrids as a fit for drivers with short commutes or local routes that can be covered electrically who still need a gas engine for longer trips. That is the key buying test: if you will charge often and use the electric range, either PHEV can make sense; if not, compare its price and expected gasoline use with a conventional hybrid before committing.
