Yes—Fortuner buyers who mainly drive on paved roads and want more cabin technology and comfort equipment should consider the Kia Sorento. In Autocar India’s 8 September 2026 comparison, the Sorento HTX(A) diesel is listed at ₹38.49–38.69 lakh ex-showroom, against ₹43.12 lakh for the Toyota Fortuner 4×4 AT Neo Drive 48V. The Fortuner has the higher-output diesel and four-wheel drive in this trim; the Sorento has the more extensive listed cabin and driver-assistance equipment. These are India-specific figures for two named trims, not a verdict on every Sorento or Fortuner worldwide.
This is a specification-and-price comparison, not a firsthand road test. It can help identify which SUV to test-drive, but it cannot establish which rides better, handles better, or uses less fuel in real-world driving.

Which SUV fits your use better?
The main choice is between the Sorento’s equipment-rich, road-oriented package and the Fortuner’s higher-output diesel, four-wheel-drive configuration, and more explicit rough-terrain focus. The right answer depends on where and how you drive, not on a feature count alone.
- Put the Sorento on your shortlist if your regular journeys are mostly paved and you value features such as a head-up display, panoramic sunroof, second-row ventilation, wireless phone connectivity, and listed driver aids.
- Give the Fortuner serious consideration if you want the compared trim’s AWD system, its greater listed diesel output and torque, or terrain modes that include Rock and Dirt.
- Drive both before deciding. The available comparison does not substantiate ride, steering, braking, handling, cabin-noise, or real-world fuel-consumption claims.
Autocar India writer Viraaj Bhatnagar characterizes the contrast this way: “The Fortuner has a reputation for toughness, while the Sorento is much more feature-packed and premium.” That is an editorial description of buyer perceptions, not a comparative long-term reliability study.

Space: the Sorento is wider and has a longer wheelbase
In this comparison, the Sorento is 20 mm longer and 45 mm wider than the Fortuner, with a 70 mm longer wheelbase. The Fortuner is 50 mm taller. Autocar India lists the Sorento with six- or seven-seat layouts and the Fortuner with seven seats.
Those measurements do not settle which cabin is more useful. If you need a second-row captain’s-chair layout, check whether the exact Sorento trim and local configuration offer it. If you regularly carry passengers in the third row, try getting in and out and sitting in the rear seats with the people who will use them. Published exterior dimensions cannot answer questions about access or comfort for your family.

The compared Fortuner diesel is listed at 204 hp and 500 Nm, versus 193 hp and 442 Nm for the Sorento diesel. Those are published output figures, not acceleration tests or proof that one vehicle feels quicker in everyday driving. The transmission and drive layouts also differ: the Sorento uses an eight-speed DCT and is offered in FWD or AWD, while the compared Fortuner pairs a six-speed automatic with AWD.

The Fortuner’s five listed terrain modes include Rock and Dirt; the Sorento’s three are Snow, Mud, and Sand. If your routine includes rough tracks or low-traction surfaces, assess the drivetrain and terrain settings on the exact trim you might buy. Mode names and equipment lists do not establish how either SUV performs on a particular trail.
Cabin equipment and assistance: the Sorento lists more
The Sorento’s compared trim adds several items not listed for the Fortuner trim in this comparison: a 12.3-inch digital cluster, head-up display, panoramic sunroof, ventilated second row, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, adaptive cruise control, ADAS, and a 360-degree camera. The Fortuner comparison lists an 8-inch infotainment screen, an analogue cluster with MID, wired phone connection, and an 11-speaker JBL system.
For parking, phone use, and long-distance comfort, the Sorento’s published feature set may be more appealing. Before treating an item as included, confirm standard-versus-optional fitment on the vehicle offered to you; the comparison notes that some Fortuner omissions may be available as optional accessories. Also check the exact equipment sheet, since specifications can change by trim or market.
Safety equipment is not the same as crash-test evidence
Autocar India lists more airbags and more driver-assistance and parking technology for the compared Sorento trim. That is a feature comparison; it does not prove a lower crash risk or a better crash-test result than the Fortuner.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s 2026 US-market Sorento record identifies a tested 2026 Sorento S 4-door 4WD and reports a Good overall result for the updated moderate-overlap front test. The record specifies that the relevant rating applies to models built after September 2025 and distinguishes earlier build-date coverage. It should not be generalized to every model year, build date, or India-market Sorento, and it is not a Fortuner-versus-Sorento test.

What this comparison cannot tell you about the drive
Specification tables do not reveal how either SUV rides on broken pavement, how its steering or brakes feel, how well it controls body movement, how much noise reaches the cabin, or what fuel economy it achieves in your conditions. The cited comparison does not provide a firsthand Sorento road test or measured results for those qualities. No drive verdict on them is warranted from these figures.
Arrange back-to-back test drives on a route that includes the roads you use most. If possible, bring your usual passengers and check third-row access, seating comfort, parking visibility, infotainment controls, and ease of manoeuvring. For an off-road use case, ask the dealer to explain the exact trim’s drive system and terrain settings and where a safe demonstration is available.
How to make the shortlist decision
- Match the trim first. Compare the Sorento HTX(A) diesel with the Fortuner 4×4 AT Neo Drive 48V only if those are the versions available to you; do not transfer their equipment lists to other trims.
- Write down your actual use. Note how often you carry a full cabin, use the third row, drive on rough or low-traction surfaces, or rely on long-distance comfort and parking aids.
- Verify equipment and price locally. Ask for the current India brochure or written specification sheet and itemized ex-showroom and on-road quotes for the exact vehicle.
- Test-drive both on the same route. Compare the qualities that matter to you directly rather than inferring ride or performance from engine figures and feature lists.
- Check safety ratings for the exact market and build. Treat airbags and assistance features as equipment, and crash-test results as separate evidence.
Verdict: For a mostly paved-road buyer drawn to a more feature-rich cabin, the Sorento deserves a test drive and appears less expensive in this specific India trim comparison. For a buyer prioritizing the Fortuner’s AWD configuration, higher listed diesel output, and broader set of terrain modes, the Fortuner remains a strong candidate. The available evidence supports that shortlist distinction—not a universal winner or a firsthand driving verdict.
