In the U.S., the Optima’s final-generation context is the 2020 model; Kia introduced the K5 as its successor for the 2021 model year. Nissan currently lists a 2026 Altima. Those are not equivalent new-car choices, so this overview compares the available official specifications and explains how to make a fair used-car comparison.
Are the Kia Optima and Nissan Altima direct competitors today?
They are comparable as midsize sedans, but the current U.S. lineups do not offer them as same-year new-car alternatives. Kia’s 2020 Optima specifications cover that model year, and Kia announced the K5 as its new U.S. midsize sedan for the 2021 model year. Nissan’s current U.S. specifications page is for the 2026 Altima. The K5 is useful context if you want a newer Kia sedan, but it is not an Optima and should not be treated as one in a head-to-head comparison. For a buying decision, compare specific used examples from the same or nearby years, with their trim, mileage, condition, maintenance history, and asking price identified. A model name alone does not establish which car is the better buy.
How do the documented specifications compare?
The figures below come from manufacturers and apply to the named model years, not every Optima or Altima. Kia offered several Optima powertrains, so its trim and engine matter. Nissan’s current Altima page lists one 2.5-liter powertrain across its listed trims.

Which one is better to drive?
The specifications suggest different powertrain choices, not a definitive driving winner. The 2020 Optima’s 2.0L turbo has the highest listed output, while its 1.6L turbo produces more torque than its 2.4L engine despite lower horsepower. The 2026 Altima’s listed 2.5L makes 188 hp and uses a CVT. These figures do not establish acceleration, comfort, handling, or how either car feels in everyday driving; those judgments require a drive in the specific vehicle being considered.
Which one is more fuel-efficient?
The available figures are not a like-for-like comparison: the Altima figure is for the 2026 model, while the Optima data is for 2020, and fuel economy can depend on engine, trim, and configuration. Nissan lists 26 city, 36 highway, and 30 combined MPG for the 2026 Altima, but that does not prove it is more efficient than a 2020 Optima. Compare official figures for the exact years and configurations under consideration, then account for the condition and service history of each used car.

Which is safer or more reliable?
Safety ratings
NHTSA’s 2020 model-year testing selection list includes both the Optima and Altima, but the selection list is not a results page and does not establish their star ratings or a safety advantage. Reliability and recalls
The cited sources do not provide comparable reliability data, so they cannot support a claim that one model is more reliable or less expensive to maintain. For a used car, assess its service records and condition rather than relying on a broad model-name ranking.

- Match model year, trim, engine, transmission, and drivetrain; Optima specifications vary substantially by powertrain.
- Compare local asking prices alongside mileage, condition, and maintenance records.
- Review official fuel-economy figures for the exact year and configuration instead of comparing figures from different model years.
- Check crash-test results and open recalls for the specific year and vehicle; verify recall completion by VIN.
- Inspect the car and assess remaining warranty coverage, insurance cost, and likely repair and parts costs before purchase.
If you need a newer Kia sedan rather than a used Optima, consider the K5 as a separate model and compare it with the Altima for the same model year and equipment level.
