A white Jeep and packed camping trailer were engulfed by water near Coongal Creek on K’gari during high tide, according to a PerthNow report published on 29 April 2024. The report said Fraser Island Towing shared the photographs and that Fraser Island Towing and Rainbow Beach Towing recovered the vehicle and trailer as the tide moved out. Queensland Parks recommends planning beach travel around low tide and using a suitable high-clearance off-road trailer when towing on the island.
What happened near Coongal Creek?
PerthNow reported that the Jeep and trailer became submerged on K’gari’s western side at high tide. The report attributed the photographs to Fraser Island Towing and said the vehicle and trailer were recovered by Fraser Island Towing and Rainbow Beach Towing as the tide receded. PerthNow’s report does not identify the travelers, the Jeep’s model or year, the trailer make or model, the exact date of the incident, or a verified cause. It is therefore not possible to establish from the report why the vehicle and trailer were caught by the water beyond its account that the event occurred at high tide.
When should you drive on K’gari’s beaches?
Queensland Parks advises visitors to travel at low tide, or within two hours either side of low tide. Its safety guidance separately says to avoid beach driving during the two hours either side of high tide. These are planning recommendations for beach travel; check the current tide times, conditions and park alerts before setting out, because conditions can change.

Can you tow a camper trailer on K’gari?
Queensland Parks recommends an off-road trailer with high clearance for trailer camping on K’gari. Its safety guidance says an off-road camper trailer must have high clearance and be suitable for the towing vehicle. This is general park guidance, not a conclusion about the trailer involved in the reported incident: PerthNow did not name its make or model or establish whether it met those criteria.
Deep, loose sand can bog vehicles towing caravans or low-clearance trailers. Recovery can delay other traffic, and Queensland Parks says vehicles have been damaged during recovery or swamped by a rising tide. A trailer’s suitability depends on its clearance and off-road capability as well as its compatibility with the vehicle towing it; a label or product category alone does not establish that a particular setup is appropriate for a given trip.

What to plan before towing on the island
- Check the latest Queensland Parks conditions and alerts, then plan beach travel around the low-tide window.
- Use a high-clearance off-road camper trailer suited to the tow vehicle, as Queensland Parks recommends.
- Allow for the possibility that a bogging or recovery could take time and affect other beach users; assistance may take many hours to arrive.
