On July 23, 2012, New Atlas reported that the Kenguru, a compact electric vehicle designed for a driver to enter and drive without leaving their wheelchair, was entering production. The announcement described a planned U.S. launch within six to twelve months; it is a historical report, not confirmation that the vehicle is being made or sold today.
How the Kenguru was designed to work
The Kenguru’s defining feature was its driver’s position: the user would roll into the vehicle in their wheelchair and operate it without transferring to a conventional seat. New Atlas’s July 2012 account described rear wheelchair access, a wheelchair-locking arrangement, and motorcycle-style handlebar steering. It presented the vehicle as suited to short local trips. What performance figures were reported
New Atlas reported two rear-mounted 2-kW motors, a maximum speed of 45 km/h (28 mph), a range of 70–110 km (43–68 miles), and a maximum grade of 20 percent. These are figures reported in 2012, not independently verified production specifications.
A separate Kenguru specification sheet dated October 2015 labels its numbers as pre-production estimates: a 6 kWh/48 V battery, a 50-mile range at 25 mph, and a stated top speed of 25+ mph (40+ kph). Those estimates should not be merged with the 2012 report as if they describe one confirmed specification set. Kenguru specification sheet (October 2015)

What “enters production” meant in the 2012 report
New Atlas named Community Cars in Pflugerville, Texas, as the manufacturer and reported that a U.S. launch was expected in six to twelve months. It also cited a historical price of US$25,000. Those statements describe the announcement published on July 23, 2012; they do not establish that the forecast launch occurred, or indicate current production, pricing, or sales availability. No authoritative current company source establishes whether Kenguru is being manufactured, sold, or supported today. The production status therefore remains unresolved.

How it differs from other wheelchair-accessible vehicles
The crucial distinction is whether the wheelchair user drives while remaining in the chair or travels as a passenger. The Kenguru was presented as the former. Other accessible vehicles can address the latter without offering drive-from-wheelchair operation.
| Vehicle or adaptation | Use described by the source | Drive-from-wheelchair operation established? |
|---|---|---|
| Kenguru (2012 report) | Driver enters and operates the vehicle while remaining in their wheelchair. | Yes; this was the defining concept reported by New Atlas. |
| Kia PV5 WAV | Passenger-focused wheelchair-accessible vehicle, with side-entry options, wheelchair attachment, and ramp access; the Kia page expected availability in 2026. | No. The cited description concerns passenger access, not driving from a wheelchair. Kia PV5 WAV |
| Renault Kangoo adaptations | Configurations for transporting wheelchair users, including one that can position a wheelchair near front-row passengers. | No. The cited Renault description is about passenger transport. Renault Group on Kangoo adaptations |
These examples are useful comparisons in accessible mobility, but the cited descriptions do not make them equivalents to the Kenguru’s drive-from-wheelchair concept.
