Kawasaki has displayed CORLEO, a hydrogen-powered, four-legged off-road mobility concept designed to be ridden. The company has announced development toward commercialization, but its published information does not establish that the public can ride or buy one now.
What is Kawasaki’s robot horse?
CORLEO is Kawasaki Heavy Industries’ concept for a rider-carrying, four-legged off-road vehicle. Kawasaki first presented it for Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai. Its legs are intended to navigate uneven ground, with the original concept description naming grassland, rocky terrain and rubble as examples. These are stated design aims, not independently verified terrain-performance results.

The horse-like shape is functional to the concept: Kawasaki describes a riding position in which the rider steers by shifting body weight, rather than using a conventional steering wheel. That makes CORLEO a personal mobility concept, not simply a walking robot built to carry cargo.
How is CORLEO supposed to work?
Rider controls and posture
Kawasaki says sensors detect the rider’s weight shifts through the steps and handlebars. The riding interaction is compared by the company to horseback riding, and adjustable stirrups are intended to help the rider maintain posture. These are announced design features; the available descriptions do not establish a retail-ready control system.

Legs, suspension and hooves
The original concept materials describe divided rubber hooves intended to absorb surface irregularities and resist slipping. Kawasaki also says the rear leg unit moves vertically independently of the front through a swingarm mechanism derived from motorcycle design. The aim is to absorb impacts while helping the rider keep looking toward the terrain ahead.
Kawasaki’s technical review describes development of rider weight-shift control and machine intervention that could autonomously correct a command in dangerous situations. That is a development description, not proof of completed certification or independently verified safety performance.
Hydrogen power—and a change in the published engine size
CORLEO is described as using hydrogen in an engine-generator arrangement: the engine generates electricity, which powers the vehicle’s drive units or actuators. Kawasaki’s original April 2025 concept description specified a 150 cc hydrogen engine for power generation. Its current vehicle overview instead specifies a 333 cc hydrogen engine in a series-hybrid system that powers actuators in the four legs and body. Those are different published descriptions from different stages; the newer page gives the current stated configuration, and the materials do not explain the change.
| Published description | Engine displacement | Stated system role |
|---|---|---|
| Original concept description, April 2025, Kawasaki Motors UK concept announcement | 150 cc | Hydrogen engine for power generation, with generated electricity powering drive units in the legs |
| Current vehicle overview, accessed October 4, 2026, Kawasaki Heavy Industries CORLEO vehicle page | 333 cc | Hydrogen engine in a series-hybrid system powering actuators in the four legs and body |
Kawasaki’s concept description also announces an instrument panel showing hydrogen level, route and center of gravity, plus projected markers intended to help indicate the path at night. These remain described features of the concept.

Kawasaki announced on December 3, 2025, that it had begun development toward commercialization and was targeting CORLEO for use as an on-site mobility vehicle at Expo 2030 Riyadh. That is a future development target—not confirmation of a consumer launch or public rides at the event. The announcement does not give a retail release date or price.
The official information cited here also does not establish a finalized range or speed. Until Kawasaki publishes those specifications and confirms availability, CORLEO should be treated as a concept under development, not a vehicle consumers can order.
What the published information does—and does not—show
- Established by Kawasaki’s descriptions: CORLEO is a four-legged, hydrogen-powered mobility concept intended to be ridden and steered through body-weight shifts.
- Announced, but not independently demonstrated in the cited materials: operation across grassland, rocky terrain and rubble; hoof grip and impact absorption; and the proposed rider-assistance features.
- Still unconfirmed in the cited information: consumer availability, price, finalized range and speed, and whether Expo 2030 visitors will be able to ride it.
Kawasaki’s commercialization-development announcement sets out the Expo 2030 target. The company’s earlier Expo 2025 announcement and its February 2026 Technical Review provide additional descriptions of the concept and ongoing control-system development.
