The 2026 Kawasaki KX250 carries forward the major redesign Kawasaki introduced for 2025, adding a current package of engine and chassis updates, rider aids, and app connectivity. It is a stronger feature-list comparison with Honda’s CRF250R than the headline’s “better” claim can prove: the manufacturers’ specifications show equipment and price differences, not which bike is faster or handles better on track.
Why the KX250 is “better than ever” for 2026
The substantial change came with the 2025 model, not a wholesale 2026 redesign. Kawasaki’s June 4, 2024 announcement described a redesigned cylinder head, a lightweight aluminum frame, a center-port exhaust, ODI Lock-On grips, Kawasaki TRaction Control (KTRC), handlebar-accessible riding modes, and Bluetooth connectivity through RIDEOLOGY THE APP KX. The 2025 KX250 announcement is the basis for calling the current bike a newer-generation package; Kawasaki’s 2026 US specifications show it continuing that platform.
For 2026, Kawasaki lists the KX250 with a 249cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke, single-cylinder DOHC engine, dual-injector fuel injection, a five-speed return-shift transmission, and hydraulic clutch actuation. The listed electronic features include selectable power modes, KTRC, launch control, and smartphone connectivity through RIDEOLOGY THE APP KX. These are published equipment details, not proof of a performance advantage over Honda.
2026 Kawasaki KX250 vs. Honda CRF250R: US specifications
The comparison below uses the manufacturers’ 2026 US-market information. Both are listed with 249cc engines and a 37.6-inch seat height, while the KX250 has a higher base MSRP before destination. Manufacturer specifications are not independent measurements or a head-to-head riding test.
#1 Best Overall
- Fitment & SKU: Precision-engineered fitment for Kawasaki KX250 dirt bikes (2018-2020) and Suzuki Quadracer 450 (LT-R450) ATVs (2006-2011). SKU: HFP-397-U2R.
- Dual-Component Refresh: This kit includes both an OE-quality electric fuel pump and a precision-calibrated 300KPA (43 PSI) fuel pressure regulator to ensure the dual-injector system receives perfect fuel atomization
- Designed to handle the extreme vibrations and high-G loads of professional motocross racing, this kit restores lost fuel pressure to eliminate hard starting, engine bogging off the gate, and mid-throttle hesitation
- Manufactured from advanced, ethanol-resistant materials, this pump and regulator are built to withstand the chemical breakdown caused by modern pump gas and high-octane race fuels, preventing internal corrosion during the off-season
- Ride with confidence – Guaranteed – As a US-based small business, we know that for a KX, throttle response is everything. Backed by our lifetime warranty, we stand by our products and our community
| Published specification | Kawasaki KX250 (2026, US) | Honda CRF250R (2026, US) |
|---|---|---|
| Base MSRP before destination | $9,099; Kawasaki separately displays a $650 destination charge | $8,399; destination not stated on the cited Honda specifications |
| Engine displacement | 249cc | 249cc |
| Transmission and clutch | Five-speed return shift; hydraulic clutch actuation | Five-speed manual |
| Curb weight | 230.9 lb without fuel; 240.8 lb with fuel | 234 lb with standard equipment, required fluids, and a full tank |
| Seat height | 37.6 in | 37.6 in |
| Front brake | 270mm disc | 260mm disc |
| Rear tire | 110/90-19 | 100/90-19 |
| Published electronic features | Power modes, KTRC, launch control, and app connectivity | Standard, Smooth, and Aggressive modes; gear-position mapping; HRC launch control |
The price figures are base MSRPs, not out-the-door prices; Kawasaki’s displayed $650 destination charge makes its listed base price plus destination $9,749 before dealer-specific charges. Honda’s cited base MSRP is $700 lower before destination. Weight figures need care: Kawasaki publishes both a without-fuel figure and a full-fluid figure, while Honda’s curb-weight figure includes standard equipment, required fluids, and a full tank. They are close enough to inform a shopping checklist, but the listed definitions are not identical.
What the feature differences tell a buyer
Rider aids and mapping
Kawasaki lists power modes, KTRC, launch control, and app connectivity. Honda lists Standard, Smooth, and Aggressive modes, gear-position mapping, and HRC launch control. Honda says its ECU provides tailored engine mapping for each gear; that is Honda’s description of its system, not an independent finding that it produces better power. The feature lists help identify what controls and electronic options each manufacturer advertises, but they do not establish which bike has the more useful calibration on a particular track.

- FITMENT - Motorcycle shift lever for KX250F 2009-2020 KX250 2019-2023 KX250X 2021-2023.
- FOLDING ANTI-SKID TIP - The tip of the dirt bike shift lever is folded, which reduces the possibility of wear and fracture when the dirt bike collides and the ground hits. The surface of the shift lever tip has delicate patterns, which effectively increases friction and makes you more comfortable to ride.
- FORGED ALUMINUM ALLOY - The shift lever made of forged aluminum alloy is lightweight and stronger, and will not add extra burden to your motorcycle.
- ANODIZED SURFACE - After anodization, an oxide film with bright color, not easy to corrode and fade is formed on the surface of the dirt bike shift lever, which can not only make your dirt bike more personalized, but also have a certain protective effect.
- EASY TO INSTALL - After removing the OEM shift lever, install the new shift lever and fix the corresponding screws.
Transmission, clutch, and chassis-related specifications
Kawasaki specifies hydraulic clutch actuation and a five-speed return-shift gearbox; Honda lists a five-speed manual. Kawasaki also lists a 270mm front disc against Honda’s 260mm disc, and a wider 110/90-19 rear tire against Honda’s 100/90-19. Those dimensions are concrete points to compare, not evidence by themselves of stronger braking, better traction, or easier handling.
The 2026 Kawasaki specification sheet lists a 14.1:1 compression ratio, with 16-way compression and rebound adjustment at the fork and 19-way low-speed compression / 22-way rebound adjustment at the rear. Kawasaki’s 2025 US page listed a 14.0:1 compression ratio and different suspension adjuster counts. These are listed specification differences, not proof of an all-new chassis or an on-track improvement for 2026.

How to choose between them
Use the published figures to narrow the question, then evaluate the riding characteristics that specifications cannot settle. The right choice depends on fit, setup, track conditions, skill level, and how the bike feels to its rider.
- Set your budget using local quotes. The US base MSRP comparison favors Honda by $700 before destination; dealer charges and availability are not established by the manufacturers’ listed MSRPs.
- Check the weight definitions. Compare the published figures with their stated fuel and equipment conditions rather than treating them as a directly measured, identical-condition test.
- Compare the controls you expect to use. Consider whether the listed modes, traction control, launch control, gear-position mapping, or app connectivity matter for your riding and setup routine.
- Assess fit and handling in person where possible. The bikes share a listed seat height, but that alone does not settle ergonomics or rider confidence.
- Seek a credible ride comparison before judging performance. Power delivery under load, suspension feel, fatigue, durability, maintenance costs, and lap times are not established by the specification sheets.
What the comparison does—and does not—establish
The manufacturer material supports a clear case that the current KX250 is built on a significantly updated 2025 platform and carries a broad set of published electronic features into 2026. It also supports a useful paper comparison with Honda on price, weight definitions, equipment, and dimensions. It does not establish that Kawasaki is objectively faster, easier to ride, more durable, or better overall than the CRF250R. Choose based on the attributes you can verify and, for track feel, a credible independent test or your own ride experience.
