Kairos is a French electric three-wheeler project that has progressed from concept to a rolling demonstrator. Its two rear wheels are designed to lean through turns, while structures around the rider are intended to add vehicle-integrated protection. Those safety ideas are still being validated: no independent crash-test results or certification are reported, so Kairos cannot yet be described as offering car-equivalent safety.
What is the Kairos EV?
Kairos is a low-slung, semi-reclined electric vehicle with one front wheel and a pair of tilting rear wheels. The feet-forward seating puts the rider’s weight over the driven rear wheels, according to the project’s description and an early photo story. Unlike a conventional non-leaning trike, its unusual rear-wheel arrangement is designed to let the vehicle tilt into corners.
The project presents Kairos as an alternative to familiar categories such as cars, motorcycles, scooters and quadricycles. The concept’s appeal is the combination of a motorcycle-like riding posture and leaning behavior with protective structures incorporated into the vehicle.
How are its safety concepts supposed to work?
Programmed Restraint Device
The Programmed Restraint Device (PRD; DRP in French) is a structure ahead of the rider. The Kairos team says it is designed to partially couple the rider to a deformable structure in a frontal impact, then release the rider in extreme cases. New Atlas reports the team’s explanation that release would occur at a lower speed than an unrestrained projection. These are descriptions of intended mechanisms, not independently demonstrated outcomes.

Mobile Lateral Elements
Mobile Lateral Elements (MLEs; ELM in French) sit beside the front wheel. According to the project, they respond to vehicle roll and are intended to contribute to stability, absorb impacts and provide storage. New Atlas describes them as wedge-shaped elements that could brace against the ground in a crash. Their performance as protective devices has not been established by published independent test results.
What has—and has not—been tested
The official project site says the demonstrator’s systems are functional and undergoing real-world trials as an initial feasibility stage. New Atlas reports that laboratory crash testing is a next step and that substantial validation and certification remain. The available reporting does not say Kairos has passed crash tests or received certification.

The figures below come from New Atlas’s April 24, 2026 report of estimates and goals given by project lead Philippe Girardi. They are prospective, not finalized production specifications or results from performance testing.

Where does development stand, and can you buy one?
The Kairos site marks the concept-and-patent and rolling-demonstrator stages complete. Its next stage—securing partnerships and funding for full validation—is ongoing. New Atlas says the team is seeking industrial partners and investors, and contacting laboratories able to conduct crash testing.
The sources establish a demonstrator, not a consumer-ready vehicle. They provide no confirmed retail launch date, consumer price or order page. The June 2024 photo story’s description of Kairos as being before a real prototype is now historical; the project’s current stage is a rolling demonstrator, as reported by New Atlas and the project site.

The design’s central question is whether Kairos can retain the engagement of a leaning two-wheeler while making its protective structures effective in practice. The available evidence describes the engineering intent and a working demonstrator, but does not yet answer that safety question.
