Joby and Virgin Atlantic have agreed a framework for a planned UK air-taxi service, but passengers cannot book flights yet. The companies expect Heathrow and Manchester Airport to be key connection points and have outlined possible routes; neither a launch date nor operating schedules and fares have been confirmed.
What Joby and Virgin Atlantic announced
On July 22, 2026, Joby Aviation and Virgin Atlantic signed a definitive multi-year commercial framework for UK air-taxi services. Virgin Atlantic is described as Joby’s exclusive airline partner for UK air taxis. Virgin Atlantic says it expects to integrate the service into its app, website and booking platforms so travelers could arrange an air-taxi connection alongside a long-haul flight. That integration is planned, not a currently available booking option. Virgin Atlantic’s announcement describes the agreement and its proposed booking approach.
Heathrow and Manchester Airport are expected to be among the primary connection points, with the companies saying the service could extend to other parts of the UK over time. These are prospective plans, not confirmation that either airport has an operating Joby route.
Which routes are planned, and how long might they take?
The July 2026 announcement gives two examples of expected early routes. The companies estimate flight times of approximately 15 minutes from Manchester Airport to Leeds and as little as 8 minutes from Heathrow to Central London. They contrast those times with car journeys taking over an hour. The routes and times are company-announced examples, not scheduled flights or guaranteed journey times. Virgin Atlantic’s July 2026 announcement provides the newer route examples.

Joby’s March 2025 announcement had cited Heathrow to Canary Wharf as an 8-minute example, compared with an 80-minute drive. The later announcement instead names Central London. Neither example should be read as a confirmed service or timetable. Joby’s 2025 announcement contains the earlier example.
The announced figures compare flight time with driving time; they do not establish a complete door-to-door travel time. Reaching a takeoff site, boarding, and continuing from the landing site all take time, and the announcements do not provide enough information to calculate those parts of a passenger’s trip. An air taxi could shorten the airborne leg without guaranteeing that the full airport transfer is faster for every traveler.

When could Joby air taxis start flying in the UK?
There is no firm Joby UK passenger-service launch date in the companies’ announcement. A separate UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) ambition is to have the regulatory framework and operational systems ready for initial commercial passenger eVTOL operations from the end of 2028. That is a regulatory-readiness target, not a Joby launch commitment or confirmation that flights will begin then. The CAA says important frameworks for airworthiness, flight operations, pilot licensing and aerodromes are not yet in place. Joby says its aircraft certification work is progressing under the FAA–UK CAA Bilateral Aviation Safety Agreement and builds on a 2022 validation application. The company’s certification progress and the CAA’s wider regulatory-readiness work are related but distinct; neither establishes a passenger-service start date.

The UK government’s March 2024 Future of Flight plan discussed a first piloted flying-taxi flight by 2026 and regular services by 2028. Those were policy milestones, not evidence that Joby has launched or a company promise to begin service in 2028. The government’s Future of Flight announcement sets out that context.
What kind of aircraft does Joby describe?
Joby’s March 2025 description says its aircraft is designed for one pilot and up to four passengers, with six tilting propellers, speeds of up to 200 mph and anticipated routes of up to 100 miles. The company says it is designed for rapid back-to-back flights and to produce a fraction of the noise of current helicopters. These are Joby’s aircraft design and performance claims; they are not demonstrated commercial-service results for the proposed UK routes. Joby’s aircraft announcement gives those specifications.

Can you book a flight or find out what it will cost?
No current bookable Joby UK passenger flights, fares or operating schedules are established by the announcements. Virgin Atlantic’s expected app, website and booking-platform integration describes a future plan, not a live way to reserve an air taxi. Joby’s 2025 statement said it expected launch prices to be comparable with premium ground ridesharing options, but that is not a fare quote; the 2026 agreement does not state ticket prices.
