JLR was hit by a cyber incident on September 2, 2025 and paused production for five weeks while it took systems offline and rebuilt operations in stages. The disruption affected factories, retail activity, vehicle distribution, parts logistics, supplier payments and other business functions. Production restarted on October 8 and returned to normal levels by mid-November.

The public record does not confirm that the event was ransomware, identify the attacker or establish the initial-access method. JLR’s later financial results show that the operational shutdown continued to affect volumes and cash flow even after factories resumed work.

What happened to JLR?

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) disclosed a cyber incident on September 2, 2025 and took systems offline as a precaution. The decision severely disrupted manufacturing, retail operations, vehicle distribution, parts logistics, payments and supplier processes. JLR later described production as paused for five weeks.

This was not an uninterrupted shutdown of every JLR activity, and the public record does not establish that the incident was a confirmed ransomware attack. A phased production restart began on October 8, 2025, and JLR said production had returned to normal levels by mid-November. The operational halt therefore ended, although its effects continued through vehicle volumes, cash flow and the wider supply chain.

JLR cyberattack timeline

  • September 2, 2025: JLR said it had been affected by a cyber incident and had proactively shut down systems to limit its impact. The company said it was working to restart global applications in a controlled manner. Retail and production activities were severely disrupted. At that point, JLR said there was no evidence that customer data had been stolen.
  • September 5: The UK’s National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) said it was working with JLR to provide support. The NCSC did not identify an attacker, disclose an intrusion method or confirm ransomware.
  • September 23: JLR extended the production pause to at least October 1 while it developed a phased restart plan and continued its investigation.
  • September 28: The UK government announced a guarantee expected to unlock up to £1.5 billion in commercial finance for JLR’s supply chain.
  • October 7–8: JLR announced that production would restart in phases, beginning on October 8 at its Electric Propulsion Manufacturing Centre and Battery Assembly Centre.
  • Mid-November: JLR’s FY25/26 annual report said production had returned to normal levels after the five-week pause.
  • January 5, 2026: JLR reported that third-quarter FY26 wholesale volumes had fallen 43.3% year over year, partly because of the production stoppage and the time needed to distribute vehicles after production restarted.
  • April 2, 2026: JLR reported a substantial quarter-on-quarter recovery in wholesale volumes as operations normalized, although full-year volumes remained well below the previous year.

Why did JLR shut down its systems?

JLR’s public explanation was that it took systems offline proactively to mitigate the incident. That is an important distinction: the shutdown was a containment and recovery measure, not proof that every factory or business system had been continuously controlled by an attacker for five weeks.

Modern vehicle manufacturing depends on interconnected systems beyond the production line itself. Factory scheduling, parts availability, supplier communication, logistics, vehicle-wholesale systems, customer-facing applications and payment processing all need to work together. If the company cannot establish that those systems are safe and reliable, restarting production can create additional risks, including incomplete orders, incorrect parts movements, payment errors and vehicles being built without a dependable route to delivery.

JLR’s restart communications described work on global applications, customer-facing systems, vehicle-wholesale systems and the Global Parts Logistics Centre. The company also set up a dedicated supplier help desk, used manual invoice payments during the disruption, re-established automated supplier payments and accelerated supplier financing. Those measures indicate a broad business interruption rather than a problem confined to one factory computer network.

What production was affected?

The safest description is that JLR paused production across its manufacturing operation and then brought it back in stages. It is not accurate to imply that every JLR site, line or business function was completely inactive for the whole five-week period.

The October restart plan began with engine and battery operations. Stamping and logistics functions followed, along with vehicle-production activities at Solihull. JLR also identified body-shop and paint-shop operations, Slovakia and other facilities as part of the staged return. The sequence reflected the dependencies involved in restoring a complex automotive manufacturing network: components and batteries must be available, parts must move through logistics, bodies must be stamped and assembled, and completed vehicles must be released and distributed.

For customers, the impact extended beyond the moment a vehicle was built. JLR said retail activity had been severely disrupted, and its later results attributed part of the quarter’s volume pressure to the time required to distribute vehicles globally after production resumed. A restart at the factory therefore did not immediately restore normal dealer inventory or worldwide deliveries.

How long was JLR’s production halted?

JLR’s annual report gives the clearest answer: production was paused for five weeks. The phased restart began on October 8, 2025, and production returned to normal levels by mid-November.

That wording is more precise than saying JLR was “completely offline for five weeks.” The company continued recovery work, customer and supplier processes were handled in different ways, and manufacturing operations restarted in a sequence rather than all at once. The five-week figure describes the production pause reported by JLR, not a claim that every JLR system and activity stopped for exactly the same length of time.

Financial impact: JLR’s losses versus the wider UK estimate

The cyber incident had a material effect on JLR’s FY26 results, but the company’s figures should not be confused with the wider economic-impact estimate published by the Cyber Monitoring Centre (CMC).

JLR’s reported FY26 figures

JLR’s FY25/26 results centre reported:

  • Revenue: £22.911 billion.
  • Profit before tax and exceptional items: £14 million.
  • EBIT margin: 0.7%.
  • Free cash flow: negative £2.229 billion.
  • Full-year FY26 wholesale volume: 307,900 vehicles, down 23.2% from FY25.

JLR attributed the difficult year partly to the cyber incident, but it also identified other headwinds, including US tariffs, conditions in China and the planned wind-down of legacy Jaguar models. The financial results therefore cannot be treated as a measurement of cyberattack losses alone.

Quarterly vehicle volumes

The immediate disruption was visible in JLR’s quarterly numbers. For Q3 FY26, the company reported wholesale volume of 59,200 vehicles, down 43.3% year over year. Retail sales were 79,600 vehicles, down 25.1%. JLR linked the initial pressure to the production stoppage and the time needed to distribute vehicles globally after the restart.

In Q4 FY26, wholesale volume rose to 95,300 vehicles, a 61.1% increase from Q3 as production returned to normal. Even with that recovery, the full-year figure remained 23.2% below FY25, showing why normal factory output did not instantly erase the disruption’s financial effects.

The CMC’s £1.9 billion estimate

In October 2025, the Cyber Monitoring Centre classified the event as a Category 3 systemic incident and estimated an approximately £1.9 billion financial impact on the UK. That figure represents broader economic effects, including consequences for suppliers and related businesses; it is not JLR’s own accounting loss.

The two figures answer different questions:

Figure What it measures
JLR’s revenue, profit, cash flow and vehicle volumes The company’s financial and operational performance, influenced by the cyber incident and other business conditions
CMC’s approximately £1.9 billion estimate A broader estimate of the incident’s UK-wide economic impact

Why the supply chain was hit so hard

JLR’s production pause affected much more than people working inside JLR plants. Automotive suppliers often operate on tight cash-flow cycles and depend on predictable orders, delivery schedules and invoice processing. A sudden loss of production can leave suppliers with parts, labour and overheads but fewer confirmed shipments, while payment systems may also be unavailable.

The UK government said JLR employed approximately 34,000 people directly in UK operations and that its supply chain supported around 120,000 jobs. On September 28, the government announced a guarantee through UK Export Finance’s Export Development Guarantee. It expected the guarantee to unlock up to £1.5 billion in commercial-bank finance for JLR’s supply chain over five years.

JLR also introduced a supplier-financing arrangement. For qualifying suppliers, the company said most of the payment could be made shortly after ordering, with a final adjustment after invoicing. JLR said this could accelerate payment by as much as 120 days compared with typical terms of 60 days after invoicing. The arrangement was intended to help suppliers maintain liquidity while JLR rebuilt its systems and resumed production.

What is still not known about the attack?

The public official record remains incomplete on the technical details. It does not establish:

  • who carried out the intrusion;
  • how the attackers initially gained access;
  • whether a specific ransomware family was involved;
  • whether a ransom was demanded or paid;
  • the complete list of systems that were accessed or affected; or
  • whether customer information was ultimately accessed or exfiltrated.

JLR’s September 2 statement said there was no evidence at that stage that customer data had been stolen. That was an update on the investigation at that time, not a final forensic statement proving that no data had ever been accessed. Similarly, the NCSC’s involvement confirms government support, but does not by itself confirm ransomware or identify a threat group.

Online claims about responsibility should therefore not be presented as established fact unless a later official forensic, regulatory or law-enforcement source confirms them. The most defensible description remains a major cyber incident or cyberattack with a severe operational and supply-chain impact.

Is JLR still shut down?

No. Based on JLR’s FY25/26 annual report and its April 2026 sales update, the production halt was a historical event rather than an ongoing shutdown. Production returned to normal levels by mid-November 2025, and Q4 FY26 wholesale volumes recovered substantially as operations normalized.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That does not mean the incident had no continuing consequences. The production interruption contributed to a weak FY26, reduced annual wholesale volumes and negative free cash flow. JLR’s June 2026 investor material continued to treat the cyber incident as a major prior-year headwind while emphasizing resilience-building and recovery plans.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was the JLR cyberattack ransomware?

JLR’s official statements and the UK’s National Cyber Security Centre did not confirm ransomware, identify an attacker or name a threat group. It is accurate to call the event a cyber incident or cyberattack, but not to present ransomware attribution as established fact.

How long was JLR’s production shutdown?

JLR’s FY25/26 annual report says production was paused for five weeks. A phased restart began on October 8, 2025, and production returned to normal levels by mid-November.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Did the JLR attack steal customer data?

JLR initially said there was no evidence that customer data had been stolen. That statement reflected the investigation’s status on September 2, 2025; it should not be rewritten as a final forensic finding that no data was ever accessed.

How much did the JLR cyberattack cost?

JLR’s Q3 FY26 wholesale volume fell to 59,200 vehicles, down 43.3% year over year. Q4 volume recovered to 95,300, but full-year FY26 wholesale volume was still down 23.2% from FY25. JLR also reported FY26 revenue of £22.911 billion, profit before tax and exceptional items of £14 million, a 0.7% EBIT margin and negative free cash flow of £2.229 billion. Those results also reflected tariffs, China-market conditions and Jaguar model-cycle changes.

Is JLR still shut down because of the cyberattack?

No. JLR reported that production had returned to normal levels by mid-November 2025, and its April 2026 update described a substantial Q4 volume recovery. The incident remains a major prior-year business and supply-chain headwind, not an ongoing production halt in the latest official record.

The Bottom Line

JLR’s 2025 cyberattack caused a precautionary systems shutdown and a five-week production pause, with severe knock-on effects for retail, logistics, payments and suppliers. Production restarted in phases on October 8 and returned to normal by mid-November. The incident’s exact entry point, attacker, ransom status and ultimate data impact remain publicly unconfirmed.
