The available Consumer Reports findings cover selected model years, while NHTSA records describe specific safety complaints and investigations—not overall mechanical failure rates. Here is what those sources do establish, and how to use it when comparing used Wranglers.
Why a four-generation ranking would be misleading
A sound ranking would require comparable reliability data across the generations. The available public evidence does not provide that: Consumer Reports’ selected model-year assessments do not add up to generation-wide averages, and NHTSA complaint or recall totals are not normalized measures of dependability.
Consumer Reports says its reliability history draws on survey information for about 380,000 vehicles and evaluates 20 potential trouble spots across 2000–2025 model years. Its public information offers useful comparisons for particular years, but not a complete numeric table for ranking all four generations.
NHTSA explains that owner complaints are considered alongside other information to identify possible safety trends and decide whether further analysis is warranted. A complaint is an allegation or report, not proof of a defect or a count of all repairs. Raw totals can also be affected by factors such as vehicle age, fleet size, use, and reporting behavior.

What the evidence says by generation
| Generation | Evidence in the available sources | What it supports—and what it does not |
|---|---|---|
| YJ | No comparable model-year reliability assessment or investigation is established in the cited material. | No evidence-based placement against the other generations can be made from these sources. |
| TJ | Consumer Reports describes the 2003 Wrangler as about average against vehicles from that model year, the 2005 as less reliable, and shows no overall reliability rating for 2006. | These differing year-specific findings do not establish a TJ-wide average or consistent generation rank. |
| JK | Consumer Reports describes the 2015 and 2017 Wranglers as less reliable than other vehicles from those model years. An NHTSA investigation recorded 473 complaints involving 2007–2008 Wranglers concerning fuel spit-back and identified a production subset with higher complaint and warranty-claim rates than comparison vehicles. | The survey findings concern selected model years; the investigation concerns a specific issue and population. Neither yields an overall JK failure rate. |
| JL | NHTSA records for 2018–2019 Wranglers include steering complaints describing shimmy or wobble, intermittent lock-up, and looseness or wandering. | These reports flag a safety concern for investigation; they do not establish a normalized failure rate or a complete JL reliability assessment. |
The 473-complaint figure is from an NHTSA Office of Defects Investigation record from 2010. It applies to the investigated 2007–2008 vehicles and fuel-spit-back concern; it is not a total for all JK problems.
How to compare a specific used Wrangler
Because generation-level rankings are not supported, judge the individual vehicle and keep different kinds of evidence separate.

- Identify the exact vehicle. The JL arrived for 2018, while the JK continued for part of that year. For a transition-year Wrangler, confirm the generation using the vehicle itself and its VIN rather than relying only on the model-year label.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use NHTSA or the manufacturer to see whether that specific vehicle has an unrepaired safety recall. A model-year recall total does not show whether an individual VIN is affected.
- Review service and repair records. Look for documentation of maintenance and completed repairs; a model-year survey result cannot tell you how a particular Wrangler was cared for.
- Inspect condition and use. Evaluate corrosion, modifications, and signs of off-road use on the vehicle you are considering. The sources summarized here do not quantify how much any one of those factors changes reliability.
- Compare like with like. Account for model year, powertrain, and configuration where possible. The available evidence does not support a complete powertrain-specific ranking across generations.
- Keep evidence types distinct. Owner surveys, safety investigations, recall records, and an individual vehicle’s repair history answer different questions. None alone is a complete measure of long-term dependability.
How to read the model-year findings
Consumer Reports survey ratings
Consumer Reports’ descriptions compare a Wrangler with other vehicles from the same model year. The cited results—about average for 2003, less reliable for 2005, no overall rating shown for 2006, and less reliable for 2015 and 2017—show why a selected-year result should not be generalized to an entire generation.
NHTSA complaints and investigations
NHTSA records are most useful here as signals about specific safety concerns. The 2007–2008 fuel-spit-back investigation and 2018–2019 steering complaint records provide issue-specific context; they do not count every mechanical problem or establish how often all vehicles fail.
