Choose by the exact vehicle’s tow equipment and ratings, then by your charging routine—not by the powertrain badge alone. Jeep’s Grand Cherokee 4xe manual lists up to 6,000 pounds of gross trailer weight (GTW) with the Trailer Tow Prep Group, but 3,500 pounds without it. The 6,200-pound V6 figure available in Jeep’s 2025 materials applies to the three-row Grand Cherokee L, not every V6 Grand Cherokee. For daily driving, charging access and trip pattern matter: the official figures cited here do not establish a universal cost winner.
Start with the exact vehicle and trailer
Before comparing 4xe and V6, identify the vehicle’s model year, body style, trim and drivetrain, then check its VIN-specific owner’s manual and equipment. A rating for one Grand Cherokee configuration does not automatically apply to another.

Weigh the trailer fully loaded and ready to travel. Jeep defines GTW as the total weight of the trailer and its contents. Also account for tongue weight—the downward load the trailer places on the vehicle—and for passengers and cargo. Staying below the maximum trailer rating alone does not guarantee that the vehicle remains within its gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) or front and rear axle limits.

- Check the vehicle’s payload information and GVWR and axle ratings; include occupants, cargo and trailer tongue weight in the vehicle load.
- Check the trailer’s loaded weight, tongue weight and frontal area against the vehicle-specific manual’s limits and guidance.
- Verify that the receiver and other required towing equipment are appropriate for that vehicle.
How much can the Grand Cherokee 4xe tow?
In the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe owner-manual table, the listed Hybrid 4×4 configurations are rated for up to 6,000 pounds maximum GTW and 600 pounds maximum trailer tongue weight when equipped with the Trailer Tow Prep Group. Without that group, the table lists 3,500 pounds maximum GTW and 350 pounds maximum tongue weight. These are configuration-specific maximums, not a promise that every 4xe can tow 6,000 pounds.

Jeep recommends using a weight-distributing hitch at 5,000 pounds GTW or higher to help ensure stable handling. Follow the manual’s hitch and equipment guidance for the exact vehicle and trailer. Installing an aftermarket receiver does not increase the manufacturer’s tow rating.
How does the V6 compare for towing?
Jeep’s 2025 Grand Cherokee L brochure gives a maximum V6 towing figure of 6,200 pounds for the three-row L configuration shown. That is a useful comparison only if the vehicle being considered matches the brochure’s configuration. It is not a blanket rating for every V6 Grand Cherokee, especially two-row models or other model years.

So, a V6 Grand Cherokee L with the matching configuration may have a higher published maximum than the 4xe figures above. But the relevant choice is the rating for the specific V6 you are considering versus the rating for the specific 4xe—not a general V6-versus-hybrid rule. Use the VIN-specific manual, equipment list and vehicle labels to confirm before buying or towing.

Which powertrain makes more sense for daily driving?
V6: published fuel-economy reference
Jeep lists the 2025 Grand Cherokee V6 with a 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, an eight-speed automatic, 4×2 and 4×4 options, and regular fuel. Its manufacturer-published fuel-economy figures are 19 mpg city, 26 mpg highway and 22 mpg combined. Actual consumption varies with vehicle configuration, driving conditions and use.

4xe: charging routine determines the comparison
A plug-in hybrid’s energy costs depend on how often and where you charge, your trip lengths and how you use the vehicle. The official figures cited here do not provide an apples-to-apples operating-cost comparison for the 4xe and V6 in the same year. Without your charging and driving details, it is not possible to say that the 4xe will always cost less—or more—to use day to day.
If you can charge regularly and many trips suit your charging routine, the 4xe may fit your daily use; if you cannot charge consistently, the potential cost benefit is less certain. Compare your likely fuel and electricity use with local prices rather than relying on a universal savings claim.

Account for 4xe availability and ownership
Jeep says Grand Cherokee 4xe production has ended and remaining inventory may be limited. Treat a new 4xe as a remaining-inventory purchase, or consider a used example. For any specific vehicle, check its condition, warranty coverage and service history. Jeep says it continues to support owners and directs them to owner manuals, warranty information, certified Mopar service centers and genuine Mopar parts.

- Match the trailer to the vehicle. Establish the trailer’s loaded GTW and tongue weight, then check the exact vehicle’s manual and labels for applicable limits.
- Verify the equipment. Confirm whether the 4xe has the Trailer Tow Prep Group; do not assume a receiver alone supplies the required equipment or changes the rating.
- Check the vehicle’s load. Add passengers, cargo and tongue weight, and stay within GVWR and front and rear axle limits.
- Compare like with like. Use a V6 rating only for its stated body style, model year, trim and drivetrain. The cited 6,200-pound figure is for the 2025 Grand Cherokee L.
- Choose for your routine. Consider how often you can charge the 4xe and your usual trip pattern; compare local energy costs rather than assuming one powertrain is cheaper.
- Review the particular 4xe’s ownership details. For remaining inventory or a used vehicle, verify condition, warranty and service history.
