The Aston Martin DB5 is James Bond’s most iconic car, but it is not the only one worth remembering. This editorial ranking weighs recognizability, memorable screen use, narrative importance, distinctive design, and how well each car represents its era in the official film series—not speed, rarity, or an audience poll.
How this ranking works
There is no canonical official top ten. The order below is an editorial judgment: a car earns its place through its identity on screen, its role in a memorable sequence or story, and what it adds to the Bond era it represents. A spectacular film moment can matter more here than a production car’s real-world performance.
James Bond’s top 10 cars
-
Aston Martin DB5
The DB5 set the franchise’s benchmark for a Bond car when it first appeared with Sean Connery in Goldfinger. Aston Martin calls it “The most instantly recognisable car of all-time” and notes its debut in the third Bond film. The marque also lists six subsequent Bond-film appearances: Thunderball, GoldenEye, Tomorrow Never Dies, Casino Royale, Skyfall, and Spectre. That long screen history and unmistakable association with Bond make it the clear number one. Aston Martin’s description and film-history listing support its place; neither makes a claim about objective performance.
-
Lotus Esprit S1
The white Esprit S1 earns second place for turning a car chase into one of Bond cinema’s most memorable set pieces. In The Spy Who Loved Me, it transforms into a submarine on screen. Lotus also identifies Esprits in For Your Eyes Only, including white and bronze cars. The submarine is a movie transformation, not a capability of the production car. Lotus recounts the Esprit’s Bond-film appearances and sequence.

-
Aston Martin V8
The V8 belongs on a shortlist of Bond’s most memorable cars, and it represents a different Aston Martin era from the elegant DB5. Its inclusion here recognizes the franchise’s recurring association with the marque and the model’s place in Bond-car history; the available evidence does not establish a particular scene or gadget for this ranking.
-
BMW Z8
The BMW Z8 brings the late-1990s period into the list through its appearance in The World Is Not Enough. It stands out as a Bond-era departure from the franchise’s familiar Aston Martin image. This entry rests on its film association and design distinction, rather than on unsupported claims about its gadgets or performance.

-
Aston Martin V12 Vanquish
Listed in Die Another Day, the V12 Vanquish represents the early-2000s Bond car: a contemporary grand touring Aston Martin tied to the series’ established automotive identity. It ranks below the DB5 because the older car’s repeated appearances give it a stronger franchise-wide presence. This placement does not depend on unverified gadget or capability details.
-
Aston Martin DBS
The DBS is another plausible Aston Martin entry in a ranking that spans multiple Bond eras. It earns a place for extending the marque’s presence beyond the DB5, though the evidence available here does not support a detailed scene-by-scene case or specific equipment claims.

BMW Z3
The Z3 represents the BMW chapter of Bond’s film-car history. It is a useful counterpoint to the Aston Martin-heavy reputation of the series, but this ranking does not assign it an unsupported scene, gadget, or performance advantage.
-
BMW 750iL
The 750iL broadens the list beyond sports cars and grand tourers, reflecting the variety of vehicles associated with Bond films. Its place is based on franchise representation, not a claim that it outranks the DB5 or Esprit in recognizability.

-
Citroën 2CV
The 2CV earns a spot as a distinctive alternative to the sleek performance-car image often associated with Bond. The official 007 site lists a For Your Eyes Only Citroën 2CV model kit, while the official car book includes vehicles from across the series. That supports its franchise relevance, but not a more detailed account of its film scene here.
-
Aston Martin DB10
The DB10 closes the list as the modern-era representative, appearing in Spectre. Its place recognizes its contemporary design and connection to that film; it does not displace the DB5, whose repeat appearances have made it the stronger franchise symbol.

What the list says about Bond cars
Bond’s automotive identity is broader than Aston Martin, even though the DB5 is its defining symbol. The Lotus Esprit’s submarine transformation demonstrates how a vehicle can become central to a film moment, while BMW models and the Citroën 2CV show that the series’ car history includes more than one marque or style. The ranking favors that combination of recognition, screen impact, and era representation over a specification contest.
Bond-car books and models
The official 007 site describes 50 Greatest Bond Cars as covering cars from all 25 films, beginning with the DB5 and including the Lotus Esprit, with archive images and illustrations. Its publisher calls it “the ultimate selection of James Bond’s classic automobiles,” which is promotional description rather than an official ranking. The same site lists a Corgi Aston Martin DB5 collector model and a For Your Eyes Only Citroën 2CV model kit; live stock and retail availability are not established here. See the official book page and 007 site listings.
Aston Martin announced a Goldfinger Continuation DB5 collaboration with EON Productions in 2018, describing screen-inspired working gadgets. These continuation cars are collector vehicles, not the original film car, and the announcement does not establish present availability or price. Aston Martin’s announcement provides the details.
