The Jaguar S-Type paired late-1990s technology with styling cues drawn from the marque’s past. It launched in 1998, entered production in 1999, and evolved from V6 and V8 petrol saloons into a broader range that included a supercharged S-Type R and, later, a diesel. For a used example, the right choice depends on its exact year and market, documented maintenance, present condition, and VIN-specific recall status—not the badge alone.
What the S-Type was—and why the dates differ
The X200 S-Type returned a name Jaguar had used in the 1960s. Jaguar Heritage describes it as a return to the company’s roots in compact luxury sports saloons and its second saloon model in the range. The car debuted at the 1998 British International Motor Show in Birmingham; the first production example was built on 11 January 1999 at Castle Bromwich. That 3.0-litre V6 SE was reserved for the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust. It was the first Jaguar built at Castle Bromwich rather than Browns Lane, a factory previously associated with Spitfire production.
The styling was intentionally recognisable as a Jaguar without being a replica of an earlier car. The Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust says the S-Type “featured several instantly recognisable Jaguar styling signatures, evoking the spirit of Jaguars of the past, without being in any way ‘retro styled’.” That is the Trust’s institutional description of the design, not a claim of universal critical agreement.
The dates describe different milestones, not a contradiction: 1998 was the public debut, 1999 the first production build, and Jaguar’s current ownership page labels the broader modern S-Type model years as 2000–2008. The title’s 1999–2007 span is a useful shorthand for the period covered by the RAC used-car review, but a particular car’s year designation and specification should be checked against its documents and market-specific literature.

How the engine range changed
The S-Type’s engine choices broadened over its life. RAC’s overview traces the broad sequence below; it is not a complete year-by-year specification chart. Exact availability, trim, and transmission depended on model year and market.

These broad stages help identify what kind of S-Type is being considered, but they cannot establish a car’s exact output, fuel economy, equipment, or transmission. Jaguar notes that specifications may change and that supplements can apply. Use the handbook and supplements for the car’s year, version, and market rather than transferring details from a different S-Type.

How to assess a used S-Type
There is no sound basis here for a model-wide reliability promise or a current price range. Auto Express’s 3 April 2007 used-car guide flagged electrical problems and advised careful research; that is period guidance, not a measured failure rate for today’s cars. Judge the example in front of you.
- Identify the exact car. Record its VIN, model year, market, engine, trim, and transmission. Check that registration and service documents are consistent, and use the VIN when checking recalls.
- Read the maintenance history. Look for dated, itemised service records and supporting invoices, rather than relying only on a verbal account or a stamped book. Gaps should be treated as unknowns, not proof that work was or was not done.
- Arrange a specialist inspection. Have a technician experienced with Jaguars assess the car before purchase. Ask for a written report on its overall condition and any faults requiring attention; a short drive or clean presentation cannot replace an inspection.
- Check recall status through an official service. Search by VIN with the recall authority for the car’s jurisdiction and obtain documentation showing whether any applicable repair was completed. The NHTSA-hosted notice linked below concerns certain 2007 S-Type vehicles only; it does not establish that a particular car is affected, that its repair remains outstanding, or the recall history for other years and markets.
- Match the paperwork to the specification. Compare the car’s equipment and claimed configuration with the correct owner’s literature. Do not infer that a feature, gearbox, or specification applies simply because it appears on another year or market’s car.
Jaguar provides a technical-publication catalogue with S-Type service manuals, owner’s handbooks, supplements, electrical guides, and vehicle information. Its North American handbook is market-specific and warns that specifications may vary and supplementary publications may be issued. Select an owner’s handbook or repair manual that matches the vehicle’s model year and market; a North American document may not describe a car sold elsewhere.
