Why did Jaguar Land Rover shut down production?
Jaguar Land Rover shut down production after a cyber incident disrupted the company’s global systems. JLR later said that its initial response on September 2, 2025, was to shut down all global systems, an action that stopped vehicle production and disrupted retail operations.

The shutdown was a containment and recovery measure rather than evidence that every JLR system or market was affected in exactly the same way. The company prioritised the recovery of client, retailer and supplier systems while investigating the incident and planning a controlled restart. The UK National Cyber Security Centre confirmed on September 5 that it was supporting JLR, stating: “We are working with Jaguar Land Rover to provide support in relation to an incident.” The NCSC’s statement on the JLR incident did not publish a technical description of the intrusion.
When did the Jaguar Land Rover cyberattack shutdown happen?
The shutdown began at the end of August 2025, became public on September 2, was extended to October 1 on September 23, and ended through a phased manufacturing restart beginning October 8. The following timeline separates JLR’s confirmed statements from wider contemporaneous reporting.

| Date | What happened | Evidence and significance |
|---|---|---|
| August 31, 2025 | Workers were reportedly sent home as the incident disrupted operations. | Contemporaneous reporting linked the beginning of the shutdown to this date; the date should not be confused with JLR’s September 2 public announcement. |
| September 2, 2025 | JLR publicly disclosed that it had been affected by a cyber incident. | JLR later said its initial action was to shut down all global systems, affecting vehicle production and retail operations. |
| September 5, 2025 | The NCSC said it was working with JLR. | The agency urged organisations to use its guidance, services and tools to improve cyber resilience. |
| September 23, 2025 | JLR extended the production pause until October 1. | JLR said the extension would provide clarity while it developed a phased restart timeline and continued its investigation. Contemporaneous reporting on the October extension recorded the decision. |
| September 28, 2025 | The UK government announced a supply-chain loan guarantee. | The guarantee was expected to unlock up to £1.5 billion in lending for affected suppliers. |
| October 8, 2025 | Manufacturing restarted on a phased basis. | JLR said production of its luxury brands had resumed while recovery continued. |
| November 14, 2025 | JLR reported that production had returned to normal levels. | The company disclosed the incident’s financial effect in its Q2 FY26 results. |
How long did the JLR cyberattack shutdown last?
The answer depends on which milestone is being measured. JLR extended its planned production pause to October 1, 2025, but manufacturing did not restart until October 8, when a phased restart began. JLR reported on November 14 that production had returned to normal levels.
| Milestone | Date | What the date means |
|---|---|---|
| Public cyber-incident announcement | September 2, 2025 | JLR acknowledged the incident and later described the global-systems shutdown. |
| Extended pause date | October 1, 2025 | The date to which JLR extended the production pause; it was not the date on which all factories immediately resumed normal output. |
| Phased manufacturing restart | October 8, 2025 | JLR said manufacturing began restarting in stages. |
| Normal production levels reported | November 14, 2025 | JLR said production had returned to normal levels. |
Therefore, describing the event simply as a shutdown “until October” is incomplete. The formal extension ran to October 1, the first phased restart began October 8, and the company reported normal production levels in mid-November.
Which JLR operations and locations were affected?
The confirmed operational effect was global-systems disruption that stopped vehicle production and affected retail operations. Contemporaneous reporting described disruption across JLR’s UK operations and at overseas sites in Slovakia, Brazil and India, but the available evidence does not establish that every site, system or market experienced identical effects.
JLR’s later results said the recovery effort prioritised client, retailer and supplier systems. That wording matters for customers: the incident was broader than a factory stoppage, but the reviewed sources do not provide a complete market-by-market account of vehicle deliveries, dealer systems, parts ordering or spare-parts fulfilment.
How many workers and suppliers were affected?
The disruption extended beyond JLR’s own workforce because automotive manufacturing depends on a large network of component makers and service businesses. The UK government said JLR employed 34,000 people directly in UK operations and that around 120,000 people worked in its supply chain.

The government described the network as the UK’s largest automotive supply chain, with many small and medium-sized enterprises. Those figures describe employment connected to JLR’s UK operations and supply chain; they do not mean that every one of those workers was laid off or that every supplier experienced the same interruption. The UK government’s loan-guarantee announcement explains the employment and supply-chain context.
Did the UK government bail out JLR suppliers?
The UK government did not announce a direct cash bailout of JLR in the cited material. On September 28, 2025, the government announced a guarantee expected to unlock up to £1.5 billion in commercial-bank loans for the JLR supply chain, backed by UK Export Finance’s Export Development Guarantee.
A guarantee is different from a grant: commercial banks provide the lending, while the government-backed structure helps support access to finance and reduces lender risk. The announced support was aimed at suppliers facing disruption after the shutdown, particularly smaller businesses whose cash flow could be strained by delayed production.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle said the guarantee would “help support the supply chain and protect skilled jobs in the West Midlands, Merseyside and throughout the UK.” The statement describes the intended purpose of the programme, not a finding that every supplier received funding.
How much did the Jaguar Land Rover cyberattack cost?
JLR reported £196 million in cyber-related costs in its Q2 FY26 results. The company said those incident-related costs formed part of £238 million in exceptional items for the quarter, alongside £42 million in voluntary redundancy-program costs. JLR’s Q2 FY26 results release is the primary source for these figures.

| Financial measure | Reported figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cyber-related costs | £196 million | JLR’s reported costs associated with the cyber incident. |
| Q2 FY26 revenue | £4.9 billion | Revenue for the quarter, down 24% year over year. |
| Loss before tax and exceptional items | £485 million | Not attributable entirely to the cyberattack; JLR also cited US tariffs, lower volumes and the planned wind-down of legacy Jaguar models. |
| Total exceptional items | £238 million | Included the £196 million of cyber-related costs and £42 million in voluntary redundancy-program costs. |
The £485 million loss is therefore not a cyberattack-only loss. JLR explicitly identified several other pressures in the quarter, so the most defensible standalone measure of the incident’s disclosed financial impact is the company’s £196 million cyber-related-cost figure.

The JLR incident contributed to wider manufacturing weakness, but national economic figures should not be presented as JLR’s own losses. According to the Office for National Statistics, as reported by the Associated Press in November 2025, the UK economy grew 0.1% between July and September 2025. AP reported that the JLR cyberattack was a key reason growth came in below expectations.
According to the same ONS data reported by AP, UK car and trailer manufacturing fell 28.6% in September 2025, the sharpest monthly fall in that measure since April 2020. The figure covers the UK industry rather than JLR alone. The Associated Press report on the UK economic effect provides the attribution and context.
Who was behind the Jaguar Land Rover cyberattack?
The attackers had not been definitively identified publicly in the authoritative sources reviewed. Some contemporaneous reports discussed claims by a group calling itself Scattered Lapsus$ Hunters, but those claims were not established as proof of responsibility.
JLR did not publicly identify the perpetrators in the reviewed company statements, and the NCSC did not publish an attribution or technical description of the intrusion. The incident should therefore not be labelled ransomware, assigned to a named threat group, or described as a confirmed data breach without a later primary disclosure supporting that claim.

What did JLR and the NCSC say about the response?
JLR described the recovery as a phased process focused first on client, retailer and supplier systems. On November 14, Chief Executive Adrian Mardell said: “In our response we prioritised client, retailer and supplier systems and I am pleased to confirm that production of all our luxury brands has resumed.” JLR’s results release published the statement alongside the production update.
The NCSC’s public response was supportive but deliberately limited. Its spokesperson said: “All organisations are urged to make use of the NCSC’s free guidance, services and tools to help reduce the chances of a cyber attack and bolster their resilience in the face of online threats.” The agency’s statement does not establish how the intrusion occurred or which controls failed.
What does the shutdown show about automotive cyber resilience?
The JLR shutdown illustrates why automotive cyber resilience must cover more than office computers. A production restart may require coordinated recovery of enterprise IT, factory technology, retailer platforms, supplier connections, identity systems and operational workarounds. The incident also shows why restoring systems safely can take longer than containing the initial intrusion.
For manufacturers and suppliers, a practical resilience review should test five areas:
- Operational scope: Map enterprise IT, manufacturing technology, retail systems and supplier systems rather than treating the factory network as an isolated environment.
- Recovery capability: Test backup restoration, application recovery, factory restart sequencing and manual-workaround support.
- Supply-chain visibility: Assess tier-one suppliers as well as lower-tier businesses whose disruption can halt production.
- Incident-response readiness: Exercise technical response, executive communications, legal coordination and law-enforcement liaison before an incident.
- Security architecture and evidence: Review network segmentation, identity controls, privileged-access management and zero-trust principles, then validate recovery-time objectives, recovery-point objectives and control effectiveness through exercises or independent assessment.
These are resilience considerations, not evidence that JLR used or endorsed a particular security vendor. The NCSC’s public guidance and tools remain the appropriate starting point for organisations seeking general defensive advice.
