The Volvo XC40 has the clearer documented new-car case in the United States: Volvo lists two 2026 mild-hybrid versions with starting prices and specifications. In the UK, Jaguar says new sales of the current-generation E-PACE have ended, though it continues to offer owner services and maintenance and presents approved-used vehicles. These are market-specific facts, not a direct global or like-for-like comparison. The right choice depends on your country, the model years and powertrains you are considering, and whether you are shopping new or used.
Availability depends on where you are buying
Volvo XC40: current U.S. specifications
Volvo Cars USA lists the 2026 XC40 as a gasoline mild hybrid in two configurations: B4 FWD and B5 AWD. The manufacturer’s prices and specifications below are U.S. figures; prices can change, and Volvo describes the power figures as preliminary estimates. Real-world fuel economy varies. See Volvo’s XC40 specifications.
Jaguar E-PACE: current UK sales information
Jaguar’s UK page states: “New sales of our current generation of vehicles have now ended. Services and maintenance remain accessible for owners.” It also presents approved-used shopping. This describes the UK market and does not establish the E-PACE’s availability or support situation elsewhere. Check local new and used listings, warranty terms, and service access for the specific vehicle you are considering. See Jaguar’s UK E-PACE page.
How the cited versions compare
The Volvo figures are for U.S.-market 2026 gasoline mild hybrids. Jaguar’s cited E-PACE figures describe the UK P270e plug-in hybrid. They differ in market, powertrain, fuel-economy or range basis, and cargo measurement, so they should not be treated as a direct performance or efficiency contest.

XC40 mild hybrid
The listed XC40 B4 and B5 are gasoline mild hybrids, not plug-in models. Volvo’s figures show the trade-off between these two U.S. versions: the B4 FWD has the lower listed starting price and higher combined mpg, while the B5 AWD has more listed power and quicker manufacturer-quoted 0–60 mph acceleration. Both are listed with five seats and the same maximum towing capacity.

E-PACE P270e plug-in hybrid
The Jaguar P270e is a plug-in hybrid, so its stated electric range is relevant only if the vehicle can be charged and the owner’s trips make use of electric driving. Jaguar gives up to 37 miles (60 km) WLTP expected real-world electric range; this is a Jaguar UK figure, not a promise of the distance every driver will achieve. Consider access to charging, journey length, and the specific used car’s battery and charging equipment. Jaguar’s page also lists 33 g/km emissions from, but that figure is not directly comparable to the Volvo mpg figures. Jaguar’s UK features page identifies the P270e details.
Space, technology, and equipment to check
For the XC40, Volvo lists 36.1 inches of rear legroom, 20.1 cubic feet of cargo space with the second row up, and 57.5 cubic feet with the rows folded. Its features page lists Google built-in, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a 12.3-inch driver display, and a digital owner’s manual. Equipment can vary by trim and market, so confirm the exact vehicle’s specification rather than assuming every item is included.

Jaguar’s cited E-PACE cargo figure is 601 litres measured by wet volume. Because this is a different measurement convention from Volvo’s U.S. cubic-foot cargo figures, the values do not establish which vehicle holds more in equivalent real-world packing. Check the vehicles in person with your usual passengers, child seats, luggage, or other cargo. Confirm the specific trim’s driver-assistance and infotainment equipment as well.
What the published safety tests do—and do not—show
Euro NCAP’s historical assessments provide context, not a current apples-to-apples ranking. The vehicles were tested in different years under protocols that can evolve, and the Jaguar’s rating has expired.
| Euro NCAP assessment | Jaguar E-PACE | Volvo XC40 |
|---|---|---|
| Test year and tested vehicle | 2017; 2.0 diesel R-Dynamic SE | 2018; tested XC40 |
| Adult occupant | 86% | 97% |
| Child occupant | 87% | 87% |
| Vulnerable road users | 77% | 71% |
| Safety assist | 72% | 76% |
| Applicability note | Rating expired 2024-01-01; Euro NCAP notes a facelift change to pedestrian protection. | Historical assessment; not a current model-year rating. |

Because the cited Jaguar sales information is UK-specific and says new sales of the current generation have ended there, a used E-PACE purchase calls for vehicle- and location-specific checks. The available sources do not establish comparative repair costs.

- Review service history, condition, warranty coverage, and any applicable inspection records.

- For a P270e, confirm charging compatibility and condition, and consider whether your routine travel can use its electric range.

Which one should you shortlist?
If you are buying a new vehicle in the United States, the XC40 is the more clearly documented option in the cited current information, with two specified mild-hybrid configurations and starting MSRPs. If you are considering an E-PACE, particularly a UK-market used P270e, weigh its plug-in-hybrid format against your charging access and verify local service, warranty, and vehicle condition. A close ownership recommendation requires the exact market, model years, trims, and powertrains—not just the two model names.
