Islamabad’s M-Tag issuance drive began on Nov. 18, 2025; that was the announced start of issuance, not the final compliance date. A later Associated Press of Pakistan report set Jan. 15, 2026 as the deadline and said vehicles without a valid M-Tag would not be permitted to travel within Islamabad after that date. The reported requirement covered vehicles registered in Islamabad and elsewhere. Because the deadline has passed, check a current Islamabad administration or police notice before travelling for confirmation of the rule and where to get a tag.
What the Nov. 18 date meant—and the later deadline
On Nov. 16, 2025, the Associated Press of Pakistan reported that the Islamabad district administration would begin issuing mandatory e-tags on Nov. 18. The announcement described coverage for vehicles entering or driving within the federal capital, regardless of province of registration. The later APP report specified Jan. 15, 2026 as the compliance deadline and said untagged vehicles would not be allowed to travel within the city after it. The later deadline supersedes the launch date as the key date for compliance. APP’s Nov. 16, 2025 rollout report; APP’s later deadline report.
Does the reported requirement cover your vehicle?
According to the 2025 rollout announcement, the rule was not limited to Islamabad-registered vehicles: it applied to vehicles moving within Islamabad, including those registered in another province. That means a daily commuter or visitor should not assume out-of-city registration exempts the vehicle.
The same announcement said a vehicle already carrying a motorway-authority M-Tag would not need an additional Islamabad e-tag under that arrangement. If your vehicle has no such tag, or you are unsure whether its existing tag qualifies, verify with the latest official notice rather than relying on the older announcement alone. APP rollout report.

How to obtain a tag and what to take
The rollout report directed motorists to use officially designated issuance points and bring the original vehicle registration card. The later deadline report advised owners to bring proof of ownership and other required documents to designated centres, relevant excise offices, or facilitation centres. The reviewed reports do not establish a current complete list of centres, opening hours, or fees.
- Check the latest ICT Administration or Islamabad Police notice for the current centre, hours, document requirements, and any fee.
- Take the original registration card and proof of ownership, along with any other documents specified in the current notice.
- Use an officially designated centre; do not treat a generic RFID sticker or an online product as a compliant substitute.
What the M-Tag system does
In a National Assembly answer, the Interior Minister said ICT Administration runs the system in collaboration with FWO. FWO issues tags for two-wheelers and four-wheelers in Islamabad, installed RFID readers at e-Naka points, and integrated Safe City cameras and systems with the tags. The government describes the campaign as enrolling vehicles in the Safe City security system and the tags as an alternative to ANPR-RFID identification.

What remains to verify before travelling
The cited reports establish the announced launch and deadline, but do not confirm whether the policy, enforcement, centres, or fees changed after the January 2026 reporting. Since the stated deadline has passed, consult a current ICT Administration or Islamabad Police notice for the rule in force and practical arrangements. The ICT Administration’s general vehicle-registration page is not an M-Tag-specific guide, so it should not be used to infer tag requirements.
