A warning sign is a reason to pause and ask questions—not proof that a repair shop is dishonest. Before approving work, get the estimate and authorization terms in writing, ask for evidence behind costly recommendations, and keep every repair order and message. The Federal Trade Commission’s Auto Repair Basics recommends comparing shops and understanding the work and price before you commit. State and local rules vary, so check your state’s requirements if a dispute arises.

10 signs to pause and ask questions

1. You do not get a clear written estimate

Before authorizing repairs, ask for a signed estimate describing the condition the shop plans to fix, the parts it expects to use, and anticipated labor. Ask whether there is a diagnostic charge, and whether you will owe it if you take the repair elsewhere. Keep a copy. The FTC explains these steps in its auto repair guidance.

2. There is no agreed limit for additional work

Ask the shop to state when it will contact you for approval before exceeding a specified amount of time or money. Write down the limit and any other work you authorize. State law may set requirements, but there is no single nationwide threshold to assume applies everywhere.

3. The bill includes work you did not approve

Ask when and how you authorized each additional repair. Request the documented approval and an itemized repair order. The FTC advises agreeing in advance that the shop will contact you before work exceeds the limit you set.

4. Labor charges are hard to understand

Ask how the shop calculates labor and what each line covers. Some shops use a flat-rate time estimate; others charge for the technician’s actual time. Compare estimates for the same work and clarify how the labor method affects the total.

5. A costly diagnosis comes without an explanation

Ask what testing was performed and what evidence supports the diagnosis. Confirm whether diagnostic time is chargeable if you decline the repair. For expensive or complicated work, consider a second opinion; a shop that offers diagnostics without doing the repair may provide another perspective.

6. Many urgent repairs are recommended without priorities

For each item, ask what symptoms or inspection findings support it and whether it is an immediate safety concern, should be addressed soon, or can be scheduled. For maintenance recommendations, compare the advice with the vehicle maker’s schedule in your owner’s manual for your type of driving. If the shop recommends more frequent service, ask why.

7. A different part is used without a clear explanation

Ask whether the proposed part is new, remanufactured or rebuilt, or salvage; whether it is original-equipment or aftermarket; and what warranty applies. Parts can differ in price and quality, and disclosure requirements may depend on state law.

8. The final paperwork does not match the work or price

Request a completed repair order listing each repair, the parts supplied and their individual costs, labor, and odometer readings at drop-off and completion. Compare it with your estimate and approvals. You can also ask for replaced parts; whether a shop must return them depends on state law.

9. The repair warranty or a service-contract pitch is unclear

There is no standard warranty for auto repairs, so ask for the coverage, duration, and limits in writing. A vehicle warranty and an optional auto service contract are different products. Before buying a service contract, review exclusions, deductibles, authorized repairers, pre-approval requirements, and maintenance conditions. The FTC explains the distinction in Auto Warranties and Auto Service Contracts. Unsolicited urgent messages claiming your warranty is about to expire may be sales pitches for service contracts; verify who sent the message and read the terms before sharing financial information.

10. The shop will not address a documented concern

First raise the issue with the manager or owner. Keep estimates, invoices, receipts, messages, dates, and the names of people you spoke with. If you cannot resolve it, USAGov directs consumers to their state consumer protection office. Its car complaint guide, last updated November 17, 2025, points to complaint options by issue. You can also report a concern to the FTC, but the agency says it does not resolve individual complaints; reports can help identify patterns. See the FTC’s guide to resolving problems with a business.

How to compare estimates fairly

A lower total is not necessarily a better deal if the estimates cover different work or parts. Ask each shop to explain the diagnosis and evidence, parts type and warranty, labor method and hours, diagnostic fees, total price, expected completion, repair warranty, and approval process for additional work. Compare like with like, and ask about the shop’s repair-warranty policy. The FTC notes that certification alone does not guarantee good or honest work.

What to do if you suspect a problem

  1. Pause before authorizing more work. Ask the shop to explain the diagnosis, price, and any proposed change to the original scope.
  2. Put the issue in writing. Request an itemized estimate or repair order and written documentation of your approvals. Save messages and receipts.
  3. Ask the manager or owner to review it. State what you agreed to, what appears different, and what resolution you are seeking.
  4. Check your state’s options. Rules and complaint procedures vary. Use USAGov’s state consumer protection office directory and car complaint guide to find the appropriate route.

These steps are general U.S. consumer guidance, not state-specific legal advice. A warning sign alone does not establish that a shop acted improperly.
