Toyota ended FJ Cruiser production after the 2014 model year in the United States. The company’s 2013 announcement described the 2014 Trail Teams Ultimate Edition as the SUV’s final special edition and said production would end after that model year.

Toyota’s current U.S. FJ Cruiser page still labels the vehicle “DISCONTINUED VEHICLE.” There was no 2025 FJ Cruiser launch, redesign, or official announcement that the original model was returning.

Why are people calling it a 2025 FJ Cruiser?
Toyota unveiled a compact off-road SUV called the Land Cruiser FJ on October 21, 2025. Photos of the new vehicle, its upright shape, exposed-looking exterior trim, and “FJ” name naturally led to headlines suggesting that the FJ Cruiser had returned.
That description is inaccurate. Toyota’s own materials distinguish the Land Cruiser FJ from the earlier FJ Cruiser:

Toyota says the older FJ Cruiser was developed with an active-lifestyle audience in North America in mind. The Land Cruiser FJ is intended to be a more compact, globally usable addition to the Land Cruiser family. The shared “FJ” identity is deliberate, but the vehicles serve different roles.
When did the Land Cruiser FJ go on sale?
The timeline matters because it rules out the claim that a new FJ Cruiser arrived for 2025:
- October 21, 2025: Toyota unveiled the Land Cruiser FJ as a prototype.
- May 14, 2026: Toyota began sales of the production Land Cruiser FJ series in Japan.
- United States: Toyota has not announced that the Land Cruiser FJ will be sold here.
The original announcement pointed to a Japanese launch around mid-2026, rather than a 2025 release. Toyota’s later announcement confirmed Japanese sales and described the vehicle as a new member of the Land Cruiser family alongside the Land Cruiser 300, 70, and 250 series.
What is the Land Cruiser FJ?
The production model announced for Japan is a smaller, body-on-frame-style off-road vehicle with the following published specifications:
- Ladder-frame platform derived from Toyota’s IMV architecture
- Two-row seating for five people
- 2.7-liter 2TR-FE gasoline engine
- Part-time four-wheel drive
- Six-speed Super ECT automatic transmission
- Prototype-rated output of 163 PS, or 120 kW
- Prototype-rated torque of 246 N·m
The output figures are Toyota’s listed prototype specifications, not U.S. certification figures. Toyota also announced Japanese base sales planning of approximately 1,300 units per month. Assembly is listed at Toyota Motor Thailand’s Ban Pho Plant.
Those specifications may appeal to people who liked the original FJ Cruiser’s simple, upright, off-road-focused character. They do not, however, make the Land Cruiser FJ a renamed 2025 FJ Cruiser.
Is the Land Cruiser FJ coming to the United States?
There is no confirmed U.S. launch at this point. Toyota’s official information confirms the vehicle and its Japanese sales, but it does not announce American pricing, EPA certification, U.S. trim levels, or a North American release date.
Toyota’s U.S. model listings include the regular Land Cruiser for the 2026 and 2027 model years. They do not list a Land Cruiser FJ or a revived FJ Cruiser. Until Toyota publishes a U.S. product announcement, claims about an American release remain speculation.
How to check whether an FJ Cruiser comeback claim is real
- Check the official model name. “Land Cruiser FJ” and “FJ Cruiser” are not interchangeable names.
- Look for a Toyota U.S. announcement. A rendering, social-media post, dealer rumor, or trademark filing does not confirm U.S. sales.
- Check the model-year listings. A genuine U.S. launch should appear in Toyota’s vehicle lineup and be supported by pricing, specifications, and certification information.
- Separate reveal dates from sales dates. The Land Cruiser FJ was revealed in 2025 but did not go on sale in Japan until May 2026.
Common claims that are misleading
“The FJ Cruiser is coming back for 2025.”
Incorrect. No 2025 FJ Cruiser launch took place. The 2025 Toyota reveal concerned the separately named Land Cruiser FJ.

That is an oversimplification. The vehicles share visual and naming cues, but Toyota describes them as different concepts and places the new model within the Land Cruiser range.
“Toyota confirmed a 2025 or 2026 U.S. FJ Cruiser.”
No official U.S. confirmation supports that claim. The original FJ Cruiser remains discontinued, and Toyota has not announced U.S. sales of the Land Cruiser FJ.
“A rendering proves the comeback.”
It does not. Unofficial renderings and AI-generated images are not evidence of a production vehicle. Toyota’s official images identify the released vehicle as the Land Cruiser FJ prototype and do not present it as a revived FJ Cruiser.
