No reliable 2025 ranking establishes one Toyota engine code as the most reliable. The widely cited 2025 dependability study evaluated vehicles—not individual engines—and its results cannot identify a single engine winner. For buyers, the more useful question is whether the exact Toyota model, engine generation and vehicle history fit the evidence and the car’s condition.
What the 2025 dependability study actually measured
J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The survey was fielded from August through November 2024 and covered 184 problem areas across nine categories, including powertrain. Its results are vehicle-level dependability findings, not a comparison of Toyota engine codes.
The study named the Toyota Corolla, RAV4, Camry, Tacoma, Avalon and Sienna as Toyota Motor Corporation model-level award recipients. Those awards recognize the vehicles within the study; they do not isolate how much an engine contributed to a result or say which engine family is most reliable.
The study also reported 199 problems per 100 vehicles for hybrids and 200 for gas-powered vehicles. These are broad averages across the study, not Toyota-specific or engine-code scores. PP100 means reported problems per 100 vehicles; it is not the percentage of vehicles that had a failure. And “2025” is the study’s publication year: the vehicles examined were model-year 2022, with three years of ownership behind them.

Why a model award or fuel-type average cannot pick an engine
A vehicle’s dependability reflects more than its engine. A model may combine different engines, transmissions, hybrid components, electronics and other systems, while weight, vehicle use, climate and maintenance affect what owners experience. A model-level result cannot separate those influences into an engine-specific failure rate.
Likewise, the small difference between the study’s hybrid and gas averages does not establish that Toyota hybrids outperform Toyota gas engines—or the reverse. It compares broad powertrain types across the study, not Toyota engine families under matched conditions.
Consumer Reports’ 2025 Toyota Corolla reliability page describes subscriber survey information covering model years 2000–2025 and 20 potential trouble spots, including engine. It states a survey scale of about 380,000 vehicles; that is not a sample size for a particular Toyota engine. The page information does not provide a cross-Toyota-engine ranking.
What a Toyota service bulletin can—and cannot—tell you
Toyota bulletin T-SB-0112-24 Rev2, revised June 19, 2025, addresses an “Engine Maintenance Required” display and diagnostic codes P268111 and/or P268115 associated with the coolant bypass valve. The bulletin identifies specified U.S. and Mexico model-years and models, including some vehicles equipped with A25A-FKS, A25A-FXS or M20A-FKS engines. Its repair procedure calls for Toyota Techstream equipment and GTS+ software.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRank #3
This is evidence of a defined repair condition, not an overall failure rate or proof that every engine named in the bulletin is unreliable. The bulletin says parts are vehicle-specific and cautions against ordering every part listed. A warning message or code should therefore be diagnosed against the exact vehicle and applicable procedure—not treated as a verdict on an entire engine family. See the Toyota bulletin for its stated scope.
How to assess a Toyota engine before buying
For a used Toyota, judge the individual vehicle and its engine generation rather than relying on a broad “most reliable” label. Work through these checks:
Rank #4
- Step-by-step procedures written from a complete teardown and rebuild, giving you the confidence to tackle repairs at any skill level.
- Over 700+ clear photos and diagrams that simplify complex systems, helping you complete jobs faster and with fewer mistakes.
- Comprehensive troubleshooting and fault-finding guides to quickly diagnose problems and reduce costly downtime.
- Identify the exact vehicle and engine. Confirm the model year, trim and engine from the vehicle’s records or identification information. Do not assume every version of a model uses the same powertrain.
- Check recalls and service campaigns by VIN. Use Toyota’s Safety Recalls & Service Campaigns lookup. It is a vehicle-specific check, not an engine ranking. Complete this step before purchase or when reviewing a vehicle you already own.
- Review maintenance and repair records. Look for a consistent service history and investigate gaps, recurring warning lights, cooling-system work, oil or coolant concerns, and prior engine or hybrid-system repairs. Records help explain the condition of that particular vehicle; they do not prove the reliability of every example of its engine.
- Search for service information that matches the vehicle. Confirm that any bulletin or repair guidance applies to the model year, market and configuration in question. A bulletin for a limited condition is not a general reliability score.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. Ask the inspector to check diagnostic history, fluid condition, leaks, unusual noises and the systems relevant to that powertrain. A clean inspection is a snapshot of condition, not a guarantee of future trouble-free ownership.
So which Toyota engine is the most reliable?
The evidence cited here does not establish a universal winner for 2025. Naming one engine code would imply a comparable engine-level ranking that the J.D. Power study and the other cited material do not provide. To compare candidates responsibly, you would need evidence for the exact engine generation that separates engine-internal failures from cooling, fuel, emissions, hybrid-system and accessory issues—and accounts for vehicle application, use, maintenance and years in service.
For a real purchase decision, the strongest practical evidence is specific to the car in front of you: its VIN-specific campaign status, service history, applicable repair information and inspected condition.
