The Yamaha YZF-R1 is a flagship supersport, but the available Yamaha sources do not prove it is the fastest Yamaha motorcycle ever. They record a historical 291 km/h speedometer reading and describe a later R1 as “Fastest on the Racetrack”—neither is a comparable, independently measured all-time top-speed record.
How the YZF-R1 began
Yamaha unveiled the YZF-R1 at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show and released it as a 1998 model. The original bike paired a 998cc engine with a compact layout intended to enable a shorter wheelbase and longer swingarm. Yamaha’s original-release specification listed 150 PS at 10,000 rpm.
Yamaha’s R-Series history traces the model’s development, while its 1998 YZF-R1 collection entry provides the original model context.
What does the 291 km/h figure mean?
In a retrospective on the R1’s handling history, Yamaha recounts an early test ride during which the bike’s digital speedometer reached 291 km/h. That is an indicated speedometer reading in Yamaha’s account—not a stated GPS measurement, standardized test result, or verified maximum-speed record.

The distinction matters: a speedometer reading documents what the display showed, but it does not establish the motorcycle’s independently measured speed or how it compares with every other Yamaha model. Yamaha’s account of the early R1 ride does not present the figure as an all-time record.
“Fastest on the Racetrack” is not an all-time top-speed claim
When Yamaha announced the 2015 YZF-R1 and R1M in 2014, it listed 200 hp and said the machines were “Designed to be the fastest machines on the circuit.” That describes their racetrack purpose, not a measured maximum speed on a straight or a comparison against every Yamaha motorcycle.

Yamaha’s R-Series history also says the 2015 R1 “proclaimed itself to be the ‘Fastest on the Racetrack’ upon its debut.” The source cites the R1’s Suzuka 8 Hours wins in the EWC and SST classes; those are racing results, not production-bike top-speed tests. What Yamaha lists for the 2026 US R1
Yamaha’s US specification page lists the 2026 YZF-R1 with a 998cc liquid-cooled inline-four engine and six-speed transmission. It gives a wet weight of 448 lb, including standard equipment and fluids plus a full fuel tank, and estimated fuel economy of 33 mpg. These are US-model specifications; specifications can differ by market.

Not as a proven all-time top-speed record on the evidence available here. Yamaha’s sources support calling the R1 a flagship supersport with a long racing-focused history; they do not provide a comparable top-speed ranking across Yamaha’s models. The 291 km/h figure is an indicated historical reading, and the “fastest” wording for the 2015 generation concerns circuit performance. Without consistently measured speeds across the comparison set, “fastest Yamaha of all time” remains unverified.
