Its entry price and published fuel-economy figures make it worth comparing; they do not establish that it has the lowest ownership cost or best long-term reliability.
How does the Jetta’s price compare with a typical new car?
Volkswagen lists the Jetta at a starting U.S. MSRP of $23,995. Kelley Blue Book, citing Cox Automotive, reported an August 2026 U.S. average new-vehicle transaction price of $50,089. Dividing the Jetta’s starting MSRP by that market average puts it at roughly 48%—close enough to describe as about half, provided the difference in price measures is clear.
The comparison is broader than compact cars alone. The August 2026 average transaction price for compact cars was $27,997, according to the same report. The Jetta’s $23,995 starting MSRP is about 86% of that figure, but this also compares a listed starting price with an average transaction price, not equivalent trims or dealer quotes.

Kelley Blue Book published the August figures on September 10, 2026. Its report noted that vehicle prices typically rise through the year and particularly in the second half, as next-model-year vehicles begin arriving at dealerships. A market average is a dated snapshot, not a prediction of what a particular buyer will pay.

These are list prices, not out-the-door prices. Volkswagen says the dealer sets the actual price; listed MSRP excludes taxes, title, accessory installation, and dealer charges. Ask for an itemized quote for the exact car, including any dealer-added items, before comparing it with another model.

Volkswagen’s current Jetta performance page lists 158 horsepower and EPA-estimated fuel economy of 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway. The page’s comparison table labels the Jetta as a 2027 model while showing 2026 competitors, so check the model year and configuration on the specific car you are considering.

Car and Driver’s 2026 review reports 33–34 mpg combined. That is a different measure from the city and highway estimates above; it should not be treated as a promise of what every driver will achieve. Compare EPA figures for the exact model year, engine, and transmission when evaluating alternatives.
Space and coverage
Car and Driver reports 14 cubic feet of cargo capacity for the 2026 Jetta. Volkswagen says Carefree Coverage includes scheduled maintenance for the first two years or 20,000 miles, whichever comes first, and a new-vehicle limited warranty for four years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Coverage terms can vary by model year and market, so confirm the terms for the car and location you are considering.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s entry for the 2025 Jetta shows different results across different categories: Good small-overlap front crashworthiness, Acceptable performance in the updated side test, and Marginal ratings for headlights and the standard pedestrian front crash prevention system. IIHS also lists blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and prevention, and rear automatic braking among available safety features.

Those category-specific results are not a single overall safety verdict. Check ratings and equipment for the exact model year and trim, especially if a particular safety feature is important to you.
When is the Jetta worth considering?
The Jetta is worth putting on your shortlist if its actual dealer price fits your budget and you want a compact sedan with the published fuel-economy figures, cargo capacity, and coverage described above. A low starting MSRP is a useful entry point, but the trim you want and the final quote matter more than the headline comparison.
For a meaningful comparison with another compact sedan, line up the same practical factors:
- Actual transaction quotes for comparable trims, including taxes and dealer-added costs.
- Financing terms and the total amount you would pay, not only the monthly payment.
- EPA fuel economy for the exact engine and transmission.
- Warranty and included maintenance terms for the relevant model year and market.
- Cargo and passenger space for your regular needs.
- Safety results in the same test categories and for the same model year.
- Insurance, depreciation, and maintenance costs. The published prices and specifications here do not settle these costs for your circumstances.
