Yes, the UK is reportedly considering tariffs on Chinese electric vehicles, but it has not imposed them. As of 5 October 2026, no published UK proposal sets out a tariff rate, which vehicles would be covered or when any measure might begin. The latest reports link the discussion to negotiations with the EU over its proposed “Made in Europe” policy.
Has the UK imposed tariffs on Chinese EVs?
No. On 5 October 2026, a UK government spokesperson told The Guardian: “We have not put tariffs on Chinese EVs. We continue to engage closely with industry so that our approach reflects the sector’s and UK’s national interests.” Reuters, in a report carried by Euronext the same day, also reported that the government said no tariffs had been imposed.
That distinction matters: reported consideration is not an announced policy, and an announced policy would not necessarily mean a tariff was already in force.
What has the government said about a possible measure?
In a written answer published on 2 July 2026, the Department for Business and Trade said it was concerned about overcapacity and market-distorting practices, and was assessing options, including tariffs. It said any action would be taken only where necessary and in a way that serves UK industry. The answer also said the independent Trade Remedies Authority (TRA) investigates whether trade-remedy measures are needed and had not initiated an electric-vehicle investigation “as of today.”

That statement records the TRA’s position on 2 July; it does not establish whether the authority’s status changed after that date. The answer is available in the UK Parliament’s written-question record.
Why are tariffs being discussed now?
The Guardian links the reported tariff discussion to negotiations over the EU’s proposed Industrial Accelerator Act, commonly described in coverage as “Made in Europe.” The issue is whether the UK could qualify as a partner under the proposed approach. This is reporting about the context for the talks, not a published legal condition or confirmation that the UK has decided to impose tariffs. The available reports do not establish what terms, if any, the UK would have to meet.
Is the UK planning to match EU tariffs?

Neither figure should be read as a prospective UK tariff rate.
What is not known about any UK tariff?
The reports do not set out a formal UK proposal. They provide no established rate, covered vehicle categories, country-of-origin or production rules, start date or duration. Without those details, it is not possible to determine whether a measure would apply to particular cars or how it might affect their prices. A consumer-price prediction would be premature without a defined policy and evidence about how any duty would be passed through.

The Guardian reports, attributing the figures to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, that BYD, Leapmotor and Jaecoo together had a 12% share of the UK new-car market in 2026, and that BYD’s share was 5.75% in September 2026. Those figures indicate the reported market presence of the brands; they do not show that tariffs have been imposed or establish a tariff effect.
