In the U.S. in 2025, the Toyota Camry outsold the Toyota Crown sedan by more than 25 to 1. That is a striking sales gap, but it does not prove the Crown is declining or that Toyota’s other models caused its lower volume. The Crown remains a distinctive, more expensive, all-wheel-drive hybrid sedan; whether it is a good Avalon replacement depends on what you wanted from the Avalon.
How far behind the Camry was the Crown in 2025?
Toyota Motor North America’s 2025 U.S. sales figures put the Camry well ahead of both Crown-badged models:
| Model | 2025 U.S. sales |
|---|---|
| Toyota Camry | 316,185 |
| Toyota Crown Signia | 20,550 |
| Toyota Crown sedan | 12,309 |
The Camry sold about 25.7 times as many vehicles as the Crown sedan. The Signia, a separate crossover rather than a Crown sedan trim, also outsold the sedan. Toyota described 2025 as a best-ever sales year for the Crown Signia, so the figures do not support treating the Crown nameplate’s results as a single, uniformly declining story. Toyota’s 2025 year-end U.S. sales release also reported 2,518,071 total U.S. vehicle sales, up 8.0% by volume.
These are annual model totals, not evidence of why buyers chose one model over another. They do not establish that the Camry or Signia cannibalized Crown sales, nor do they show a year-over-year decline for the Crown sedan. Toyota’s Q3 2026 U.S. sales release reported 633,223 total vehicle sales for the quarter, up 0.6% year over year, but its accessible text does not give model-specific Crown or Camry totals. A current model-level trend therefore cannot be verified from that release.

What makes the Crown different from the Camry?
Toyota presents the 2026 Crown as a sedan with a raised stance and styling that mixes sedan and crossover cues. Unlike a conventional step up from a Camry, it has standard all-wheel drive across the U.S. lineup and a substantially higher starting price. The Crown’s four grades range from an efficiency-focused hybrid to a more powerful turbocharged hybrid.
| 2026 Crown grade | Starting MSRP | Powertrain and Toyota-estimated fuel economy |
|---|---|---|
| XLE | $41,440 | 2.5-liter hybrid; 42 city/41 highway mpg, 41 combined mpg |
| Limited | $45,950 | 2.5-liter hybrid; 42 city/41 highway mpg, 41 combined mpg |
| Nightshade | $48,765 | 2.5-liter hybrid; 42 city/41 highway mpg, 41 combined mpg |
| Platinum | $54,990 | 2.4-liter turbo Hybrid MAX; 340 net combined horsepower, 400 lb-ft. net combined torque, 30 combined mpg |
Prices are Toyota’s listed base MSRPs; destination, options, local pricing and dealer charges can change the amount paid. Fuel economy figures are Toyota estimates. The 2.5-liter grades prioritize efficiency, while the Platinum’s Hybrid MAX system delivers more output with lower estimated combined fuel economy. That is a substantive powertrain choice, not just a trim-level styling distinction. Toyota’s 2026 Crown specifications list standard all-wheel drive, a 12.3-inch multimedia touchscreen, Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, and heated and ventilated front seats. Equipment such as a panoramic roof and JBL audio depends on grade; check the exact configuration when comparing vehicles.

Is the Crown Signia another Crown sedan?
No. The 2026 Crown Signia is a hybrid crossover, with a different body format and cargo access from the Crown sedan. Toyota lists two grades:
| 2026 Crown Signia grade | Starting MSRP | Toyota-estimated fuel economy |
|---|---|---|
| XLE | $44,690 | 39 city/37 highway mpg |
| Limited | $49,090 | 39 city/37 highway mpg |
Those prices put the Signia near the Crown sedan’s entry point, but they are not interchangeable choices: the Signia offers crossover utility, while the sedan has a lower, car-like body. The right comparison depends on whether you want a sedan’s form or a crossover’s cargo access. Toyota lists the Signia’s grades and fuel economy on its Crown Signia model page.

Is the Toyota Crown a good Avalon replacement?
The Crown can fill some of the Avalon’s role as a larger, more upscale Toyota sedan, but it is not a like-for-like successor. Toyota describes the Crown as blending sedan and crossover characteristics, and the U.S. lineup is hybrid-only and all-wheel-drive. A buyer who valued the Avalon’s traditional sedan character should consider whether the Crown’s higher ride height, styling and pricing fit the same need.
The case for the Crown is strongest for someone who wants standard AWD, hybrid efficiency and a more distinctive sedan than the Camry. The XLE, Limited and Nightshade are the efficiency-oriented choices at Toyota-estimated 41 mpg combined; Platinum is the higher-output option at 340 net combined horsepower and 30 mpg combined. The Camry’s much larger 2025 sales total shows it is the volume choice, not that it is automatically a better fit for every buyer.

What the sales comparison does—and does not—say
Camry sales dwarfed Crown sedan sales in 2025, and the Crown Signia occupied a separate, crossover-shaped niche with its own best-ever year, according to Toyota. The figures establish relative volume for that year; they do not reveal the cause of the gap or prove the Crown sedan is losing ground. Toyota’s Q3 2026 release does not provide the model-level figures needed to establish a newer sales trend.
