Probably—but a production Celica has not been formally announced. In November 2024, Toyota executive vice-president Yuki Nakajima was reported as saying, “We will make the Celica.” Later reporting points to a possible four-wheel-drive revival, but Toyota has not confirmed a launch date or final powertrain and specification. The evidence supports a serious revival plan, not a car with settled showroom details.
What Toyota has said about a new Celica
At Rally Japan in November 2024, Nakajima reportedly told Japanese magazine Best Car, “We will make the Celica.” Car and Driver traced the quotation to Best Car and reported that Nakajima also said, “I’m not sure if it’s okay to say this in a public forum.” Toyota did not comment when Car and Driver asked about future products. This is a significant reported statement from a Toyota executive, but it is not a formal Toyota product announcement. Car and Driver’s report
When could the Celica return?
There is no confirmed launch date. In August 2026, Autocar reported that Toyota had not committed to a timeline. Any date such as 2027 should therefore be treated as press speculation, not a schedule announced by Toyota. Autocar’s August 2026 report
What might the revived Celica be like?
Four-wheel drive is reported, but details remain open
Autocar’s March 2026 report said a Toyota spokesperson confirmed four-wheel drive. Its later report described AWD as expected. Those reports make AWD a reasonable expectation, but they do not establish a complete production specification. No confirmed output, transmission, trim lineup, or other final equipment details are available in these reports. Autocar, August 2026 Autocar, March 2026

Engine and hybrid choice have not been settled
In a March 2026 interview, Toyota Gazoo Racing marketing manager Mikio Hayashi said Toyota was considering different engine sizes and had not decided between a standard hybrid and a plug-in hybrid. He also said the company could not give a timeline for engine development. His comments describe work in progress, not a confirmed engine or hybrid system. Autocar’s March 2026 report
Hayashi’s reported remarks were: “We are thinking about various sizes, but we are not at a stage where we can tell you exactly what size it is. Nothing has been decided yet about whether it will be a standard hybrid or plug-in hybrid.” On timing, he said: “We cannot point to a timeline but can say we are making steady progress.”

Is the WRC test car the new road-going Celica?
Not on the evidence available. Autocar’s August 2026 report linked revival speculation to a two-door test mule for Toyota’s 2027 World Rally Championship contender. But the rally car and a possible road-going Celica are separate claims: upcoming WRC rules no longer tie rally-car bodywork to a current road car. A camouflaged test vehicle therefore does not prove the production car’s name, design, or release date. Autocar’s August 2026 report

Toyota’s rally record explains why talk of a Celica revival brings four-wheel drive and competition heritage to mind. Toyota’s official history records a Celica ST165 victory in 1989 and an ST185 victory in 1993; it also records the company’s first manufacturers’ title in 1993. These are historical achievements, not evidence that a new road car will reproduce the old GT-Four formula. Toyota’s motorsports history

The original connection between the road car and rally competition was explicit: Toyota’s 1991 release described the four-wheel-drive Celica GT-Four RC as the homologation base for its future Group A rally car. That history gives the revival context, but it does not establish the new car’s hardware. Toyota’s 1991 GT-Four RC release

How to read the claims as updates arrive
- Formal announcement: A Toyota press release or official product page would establish that the company has announced the car. The reported Nakajima remark is evidence of intent, not that kind of announcement.
- Confirmed specification: Treat an item as settled only when Toyota states it or a report clearly attributes confirmation to the company. Hybrid type and engine size were still undecided in Hayashi’s March 2026 comments.
- Expectation: Descriptions such as “expected” AWD and suggested launch years are not equivalent to final specifications or a confirmed schedule.
- Road car versus rally car: A WRC test mule may prompt speculation, but it does not by itself establish a showroom model’s identity or timing.
