Short answer: There is no evidence-based reliability verdict that applies to every Nissan VQ V6. VQ is a family of engines, and the available Nissan sources do not establish a family-wide failure rate, expected lifespan, or universal model-year cutoff. For a specific car, the exact engine and application, maintenance records, symptoms, and inspection findings matter more than the family name.
Why there is no single reliability verdict
“VQ” identifies an engine family, not one identical engine fitted to every Nissan. Nissan’s 2007 engineering presentation describes the VQ37VHR as based on the VQ35HR, with changes intended to improve performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions. It also notes design changes including a revised oil-pump rotor, piston-ring processing, and enhanced chain-cover durability. That is engineering context—not evidence of long-term reliability or a basis for ranking every VQ variant. Nissan Global’s 2007 VVEL presentation also says the VQ35HR received Ward’s 10 Best Engines recognition for 13 consecutive years; an award history is not a reliability measurement.
The cited primary sources do not provide a fleet-wide VQ failure rate, a universal lifespan estimate, or a year after which every VQ can be considered free of a particular problem. Claims that all VQs share a specific reliability outcome go beyond what these sources establish.
What Nissan’s timing-chain bulletin does—and does not—show
Nissan bulletin NTB10-046, dated March 19, 2010, updates removal and installation procedures for the VQ35 front timing-chain case and chains, and adds procedures for chain tensioners and a tensioner shoe. Its stated applications are limited to the 2004–2006 Altima (L31) with the VQ35DE, the 2004–2008 Maxima (A34), and the 2004–2009 Quest (V42). Read Nissan bulletin NTB10-046.

This is a repair-procedure bulletin for specific applications. It does not say that every engine in those applications failed, that every one needs preventive chain replacement, or that the procedure applies to other VQ variants. Nissan also cautions that its bulletins are intended for qualified technicians and that readers should not assume a described condition applies to a particular vehicle. Treat the bulletin as documentation of a service procedure, not a diagnosis of an individual car.
How to assess a VQ-powered car before buying
- Identify the exact vehicle and engine. Confirm the model year, model, market, and engine code using vehicle documentation or a qualified inspection. Do not transfer a repair claim for one VQ variant to another.
- Review the maintenance history. Ask for records and compare completed work with the maintenance schedule for that exact vehicle. Nissan says its schedule is personalized to vehicle configuration, distance traveled, and driving conditions. Check Nissan’s maintenance schedules.
- Check the car’s present condition. Look for visible oil leaks, check the oil level, listen for unusual running or startup noises, and note warning lights. These are sensible used-car checks, not a Nissan-published VQ-specific checklist.
- Get warning signs investigated. If a warning light, abnormal noise, oil-pressure concern, or incomplete history raises questions, have a qualified technician inspect the vehicle. A diagnostic code can point toward an area to investigate; it does not, by itself, prove which component has failed.
- Compare evidence, not engine-family reputation. Weigh the records, symptoms, diagnostic findings, and documentation of completed repairs for each actual vehicle. The available sources do not support a reliability ranking of all VQ variants.
How to investigate a suspected repair
For a vehicle covered by NTB10-046, a technician can check the bulletin’s application and determine whether its procedure is relevant to the car’s symptoms and condition. Do not order timing-chain parts or assume a chain repair is needed solely because a VQ35-powered vehicle falls within the listed years.

The cited Nissan sources do not establish a VQ-wide expected lifespan. They therefore cannot support a reliable mileage promise for every version or vehicle. For an individual car, maintenance records, current condition, diagnostic results, and the quality of any completed repairs are more useful than a lifespan figure applied to the whole family.
