Is the Mercedes-Benz S-Class the Most Reliable Model of the Last 25 Years?

Available reliability studies do not establish the S-Class as Mercedes-Benz’s most reliable model over the last 25 years. Here’s what they do—and don’t—show.

No—not on the evidence available here. The S-Class may be reliable in particular years or configurations, but the sources cited do not compare it with every other Mercedes-Benz model over the last 25 years. They cannot establish it as the brand’s most reliable model, or identify the most reliable S-Class years.

What would prove the S-Class is Mercedes-Benz’s most reliable model?

A defensible answer needs a like-for-like comparison across Mercedes-Benz models and model years, using a consistent reliability measure. The comparison should specify its geographic market, owner cohort and time in service, and account for sample size or uncertainty. It should also explain how it treats redesigns and different powertrains, and whether it measures the frequency and severity of faults, repair costs, or dependability.

Those measures are not interchangeable. A brand ranking, one model-year rating, recall history, repair-cost estimate, and owner-reported problem survey answer different questions. Without a consistent 25-year comparison, a high score for one S-Class year cannot establish a brand-wide, long-term winner.

What the available reliability studies show

Consumer Reports: a long model-year span, but no S-Class verdict here

Consumer Reports says its reliability histories draw on member surveys and cover several hundred makes and models, including model years 2000 through 2025 and some early 2026 models. The histories cover trouble spots such as engines, transmissions, brakes, and electrical accessories. That scope can support research across model years, but the cited information does not show an S-Class ranking against the rest of Mercedes-Benz’s lineup.

J.D. Power: a recent dependability study, not a 25-year brand ranking

J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measured 184 specific problem areas across nine broad categories. It surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership; fieldwork ran from August through November 2024. The reported industry average was 202 problems per 100 vehicles.

Those figures describe the study and the industry average, not the S-Class. A study of 2022 vehicles after three years of ownership cannot, by itself, identify the most reliable Mercedes-Benz model over 25 years.

The 2023 S-Class rating: one model-year page

J.D. Power’s page for the 2023 S-Class describes a quality and reliability score based on owner-experienced defects, malfunctions, and design flaws, from the engine to infotainment. The page also says that previous-year ratings and review data are used. It is useful as a dated, individual-model reference, but it does not compare the S-Class with all Mercedes-Benz models across a quarter-century.

Why older S-Class ratings need careful interpretation

A secondary historical overview describes disagreement over the W220 generation. It attributes a poor assessment to Consumer Reports, then says Consumer Reports later revised ratings for 2001 and 2002 to average. That account is historical context, not a current ranking; a specific claim about those ratings should be checked against the original Consumer Reports material from the period.

The example also shows why a year-specific judgment should carry its source and date. Ratings can differ or change, and an assessment of one generation cannot stand in for every S-Class generation—or for a comparison with every other Mercedes-Benz model.

Is the Mercedes S-Class reliable?

The cited sources do not establish a single reliability verdict for the S-Class across all years. They provide a general survey framework and an individual 2023 model-year rating page, but no comparable long-term S-Class result spanning multiple generations. Reliability can vary by model year, powertrain, and vehicle condition, so the evidence here is insufficient to label the S-Class uniformly reliable or unreliable.

Which S-Class years are most reliable?

No year can be named from these sources. A useful year-by-year answer would need comparable data for each model year, with the market, engine or trim, data date, and specific failure evidence identified. The available ratings and study context do not provide that comparison.

What to check before choosing a used S-Class

A model-level rating cannot tell you whether a particular used car has been maintained well or has unresolved faults. For a specific vehicle, assess its history and condition rather than treating a broad model reputation as a substitute for inspection.

  • Confirm the model year, market, engine, and trim; do not assume results for one configuration apply to another.
  • Review the individual vehicle’s maintenance and repair history.
  • Arrange a vehicle-level inspection before purchase.
  • Use year-specific reliability or repair evidence only when its source, date, and measurement are clear.
