The Mazda EZ-6 is an electrified midsize car developed with Changan for China, where Mazda announced both battery-electric (BEV) and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) versions. Its European counterpart, the Mazda6e, is a BEV based on the EZ-6. The relationship makes “electric successor” useful shorthand, but Mazda has not established that the EZ-6 replaces every Mazda6 worldwide. Instead, it offers a clear example of Mazda’s staged, multi-solution approach to electrification.
Is the Mazda EZ-6 the electric Mazda6?
It is related to the Mazda6 nameplate, but it is not simply a single global replacement for every previous Mazda6. Changan Mazda unveiled the EZ-6 at Auto China on April 25, 2024. Mazda described it as an electrified model developed and manufactured in cooperation with Mazda and Chongqing Changan Automobile, combining Mazda design and driving priorities with Changan’s electrification and smart-vehicle technology. Mazda later said the EZ-6 launched in China in October 2024.
The name and role require a market distinction: the EZ-6 is the China-market model, while the Mazda6e is the European BEV based on it. Mazda’s announcements do not establish the EZ-6 as a vehicle sold in every market or as a one-for-one successor to all prior Mazda6 versions.
Is the Mazda EZ-6 fully electric?
Not in every announced form. In China, Mazda announced two powertrain types: a BEV and a PHEV. A BEV runs on battery electricity; a PHEV combines a rechargeable battery and electric motor with a combustion engine. Mazda’s European Mazda6e is a BEV, not the PHEV version announced for China.

China EZ-6: BEV and PHEV
At the April 2024 unveiling, Mazda gave provisional range figures of about 600 km for the EZ-6 BEV under China’s CLTC test cycle and more than 1,000 km of total range for the PHEV. These were provisional company figures at unveiling, not independent test results or current European specifications.
Europe Mazda6e: BEV
Mazda’s January 2025 European release listed two battery capacities, 80 kWh and 68.8 kWh, and ranges of 552 km and 479 km, respectively. The cited specification lines do not identify the range test cycle, so these figures should not be directly ranked against the EZ-6’s provisional CLTC claims.

What is the difference between the Mazda EZ-6 and Mazda6e?
The EZ-6 is the China-market electrified model, announced in BEV and PHEV forms. The Mazda6e is its European-market BEV counterpart, which Mazda says was refined to meet European customers’ needs. Mazda reported the Mazda6e went on sale in Europe in September 2025.

The measurements above are Mazda-published specifications, not independent findings. The EZ-6 dimensions were explicitly provisional at unveiling. Differences in market, powertrain, test-cycle disclosure and specification timing make a direct range comparison misleading.

Where is the EZ-6 or Mazda6e available?
Mazda reported the EZ-6’s China launch in October 2024 and the Mazda6e’s European on-sale date as September 2025. In an April 2026 update, Mazda said introductions in Australia, ASEAN and other regions were planned during 2026. That statement records plans, not confirmation that the car is currently available in each named market. Buyers should check their country’s Mazda site or dealer for a local launch and specification.
What does the EZ-6 mean for Mazda’s electric-car plans?
The EZ-6 demonstrates one part of Mazda’s multi-solution strategy, not a commitment to an all-electric lineup. Mazda says it is responding to different customer needs and environmental regulations with a range of products and electrification technologies. Its March 18, 2025 Lean Asset Strategy described the period through 2030 as the “dawn of electrification” and emphasized making timely use of existing assets.

Partner-developed cars alongside Mazda’s own EV work
In its 2025 briefing, Mazda said it planned an in-house BEV using its first dedicated EV platform for launch in 2027. It also said a second crossover SUV was progressing after the EZ-6 collaboration, with third and fourth models under consideration. These are company plans, not guarantees of future launch dates or specifications. Together, the announcements point to a staged approach: partner-developed vehicles such as the EZ-6 alongside Mazda’s own dedicated-platform BEV development.

The car shows how Mazda is extending its familiar design and driving language into an electrified vehicle developed through a partnership. At the unveiling, Mazda cited KODO-Soul of Motion design and its Jinba-ittai ideal of a close relationship between car and driver; it also highlighted Changan-supplied electric-vehicle and smart technology. These are Mazda’s stated aims, not independent assessments of how the car drives.

The EZ-6/Mazda6e was named the 2026 World Car Design of the Year winner. Mazda’s April 2, 2026 release relayed the World Car Awards’ account that the winner was selected from 90 eligible models by votes cast by 98 automotive journalists worldwide; the results were announced April 1 local time in New York. This recognizes design, rather than serving as evidence about sales, driving performance or the pace of Mazda’s electrification.
