Sometimes—but a low asking price alone does not make a used Jaguar XJ a bargain. The available buying advice here applies mainly to the X351 generation, sold for model years 2011–2019. For those cars, the right decision depends on the exact engine and build date, service records, inspection findings and VIN-specific recall status. There is no verified current price or ownership-cost comparison here that proves an XJ is cheaper to own than a rival.
Which Jaguar XJ does this advice cover?
Jaguar used the XJ name across multiple generations, so do not apply one generation’s buying advice to every XJ. The year-specific guidance below concerns the X351, which CarScout identifies as launching for the 2011 model year. Its year ratings are a secondary guide’s assessments, not an official Jaguar reliability verdict. Confirm the car’s build date, engine and equipment from its records and the vehicle itself.
Badges can be misleading: CarScout notes that names such as “Supercharged,” “Portfolio” and “Premium Luxury” could refer to trims or equipment modifiers, and trim naming shifted across years. Verify the actual powertrain and fitted equipment rather than relying on a badge.
Which X351 model years deserve closer scrutiny?
CarScout’s buyer’s guide says the 5.0-liter V8 timing-chain and tensioner design was revised during 2014. It flags 2011–2013 as caution years and calls 2017–2019 its best overall years. Those are guide-level judgments, not assurances that later cars are trouble-free or that earlier ones are necessarily defective.

| X351 model-year framing | What the guide says | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 2011–2013 | CarScout flags these as caution years for the early 5.0-liter V8 timing-chain design. | On a V8, verify build details and service history; have any cold-start rattle assessed by a specialist. |
| 2014–2016 | CarScout describes these as good value or mechanically solid, with caveats; it dates the timing-chain redesign to mid-2014. | Do not assume every 2014 has the revised design. Confirm the build date and engine, not just the model year. |
| 2017–2019 | CarScout calls these its best overall years. | Treat this as a guide’s preference, not a guarantee of condition, reliability or completed recall work. |
CarScout also identifies 2013 as the facelift year and says that year brought the 3.0-liter V6 and all-wheel drive, alongside an eight-speed automatic. Verify the specification of the particular car: equipment and powertrain can vary by year and example.
What to inspect before buying an X351
Arrange a pre-purchase inspection with an independent Jaguar specialist. The following checks help identify issues to investigate; they are not diagnoses, and a clean result on one item does not establish that the car is mechanically sound.
Cold-start the 5.0-liter V8
If possible, make sure the engine is genuinely cold before starting it. CarScout especially recommends this check for builds before March 2014. Listen for a rattle from the front of the engine that fades as it warms, which the guide associates with timing-chain tensioner concerns. A persistent rattle or warning message calls for specialist diagnosis before purchase.
Look for cooling-system and oil leaks
Check for signs of coolant loss and residue around the water-pump pulley area. Inspect for oil seepage near the vacuum-pump housing. CarScout says these checks apply across the engines covered by its X351 guide.

Check how the air suspension behaves
If the car has air suspension, leave it parked overnight if practical, then look for a corner sitting lower than the others. With the engine off, listen for repeated compressor cycling. CarScout associates those symptoms with air-spring leaks and compressor strain; ask a specialist to investigate rather than treating them as proof of a particular failed part.
Observe the instrument cluster on 2016–2017 cars
Watch the cluster through a drive and ask for documentation of any applicable recall work. The buyer’s guide calls out cluster operation on 2016–2017 examples, but the vehicle’s VIN determines whether a recall applies.
Review records and the exact vehicle specification
- Match the engine, equipment and build date to the vehicle’s records; do not infer them from a trim badge.
- Review available service documentation and have the inspection findings assessed in context.
- Check open recalls using the VIN and confirm unresolved work with Jaguar or a dealer.
How to check an XJ’s recall status
Use the specific vehicle’s VIN. Jaguar USA cautions that a recall campaign may not affect every vehicle in a model line. Its recall page says its displayed information covers campaigns issued in the prior 15 years and model years 1995 onward; the page’s update-date field appeared as a placeholder when accessed on October 8, 2026. Check with Jaguar or a dealer to confirm whether work remains outstanding.
Jaguar USA’s VIN recall search
NHTSA also says a VIN or license-plate search identifies whether a particular vehicle needs recall repair, while year/make/model results are general. Its lookup has limits: it excludes recalls already repaired, some newly announced recalls still being matched to VINs, recalls older than 15 years, and international vehicles. If the result is unclear, confirm directly with the manufacturer or dealer.

What complaint data can—and cannot—tell you
ForCar’s analysis of NHTSA complaints covers Jaguar XJs from model years 2003–2019 and lists categories including service brakes, hydraulic systems, vehicle speed control, electrical systems, engine, suspension, engine/cooling and powertrain. It reports “1.16 complaints per production run against 3.72 for the market” on a page updated in October 2026. That is a complaint-data rate using ForCar’s stated production-run denominator, not an objective reliability score or a prediction about any one car.
Complaint records capture only some reported faults—those serious enough to reach a regulator, in ForCar’s description. They do not measure every defect, cosmetic issue or running cost. Use them as a signal to inform questions and inspection, not as proof that a particular year is safe or unsafe.

So, is a used Jaguar XJ a bargain?
It can be an appealing purchase if the specific car’s condition, records and inspection justify its asking price. But the available evidence does not establish current market prices, repair-cost totals or a price advantage over competing luxury sedans. Compare actual local listings for similar years, engines, mileage and condition, then account for what the inspection finds and any unresolved recall work. A discounted XJ with uncertain history or uninvestigated symptoms may not be a bargain; a well-documented, properly inspected example may be worth considering.
