Yes—if you want a quick, rear-wheel-drive Mustang that costs less to buy and uses less fuel than a V8 GT, the EcoBoost is a strong choice. For 2025 and 2026, Ford lists its 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder at 315 hp and 350 lb-ft. The trade-off is substantial: less power and a different sound and character from the V8. Reliability evidence is mixed and limited at the engine level, so a used car’s own history matters more than a blanket verdict.
What the Mustang EcoBoost offers
The EcoBoost is the four-cylinder Mustang, not simply a low-powered version of the same driving experience. Ford’s 2025 specifications describe a 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four with port and direct injection, a twin-scroll turbocharger, and overboost. It sends power to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential.
Ford lists 315 hp at 5,500 rpm and 350 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm for both the 2025 and 2026 EcoBoost. The 2025 is offered as a Fastback coupe or Convertible, with Premium versions also available. Is it fast enough?
Yes, for most drivers looking for an affordable sports coupe with genuinely brisk acceleration. MotorTrend reports instrumented 0–60 mph times ranging from 4.9 to 6.3 seconds across EcoBoost versions it tested, with quarter-mile times dipping into the low 13-second range. Those results span different years and configurations; they are not a promise for every car. The turbo-four’s strong torque, rear-wheel drive, limited-slip differential, and selectable drive modes give it a performance case beyond its price and fuel economy.

The EcoBoost is not a GT substitute in outright power. Ford lists the 2025 GT at 480 hp and 415 lb-ft as standard, or 486 hp and 418 lb-ft with the available active-valve exhaust. The 2025 Dark Horse is rated at 500 hp and 418 lb-ft. If acceleration, V8 sound, or the character of a naturally aspirated eight-cylinder is central to why you want a Mustang, the EcoBoost may feel like the wrong version even if it is quick.
Fuel economy and cost compared with a GT
For a specific reference point, Ford rates the 2025 EcoBoost coupe with the standard automatic at 22 mpg city, 33 highway, and 26 combined under EPA estimates. MotorTrend gives a broader cross-version comparison of 21–22 mpg city and 32–33 highway for EcoBoosts, versus 14–15 city and 23–25 highway for GTs. These ranges cover versions rather than identical configurations tested under the same conditions. MotorTrend also notes that the entry EcoBoost in the S650 generation costs over $10,000 less than the basic GT, and that tires, insurance, and routine costs tend to favor the EcoBoost. Treat those as general comparisons, not a quote: actual purchase prices, insurance premiums, and maintenance costs depend on location, vehicle, and driver. Reliability: what is known and what is not
There is not enough evidence here to label every EcoBoost reliable or unreliable, or to give a dependable failure rate for the 2.3-liter engine across model years. Consumer Reports’ 2025 Mustang assessment says the model is more reliable than other cars from the same model year. Its rating is for the Mustang nameplate, not a controlled estimate for EcoBoost engines alone. Some owners use the term “EcoBoom” for reported catastrophic EcoBoost engine failures, including cases associated with coolant intrusion, misfires, head-gasket failure, or internal damage. MotorTrend discusses these reports while distinguishing owner accounts and litigation from established population-level facts.
