Top Gear’s 2025 reviewer said the Ferrari Roma Spider “might even be prettier than the coupe” with its roof down. That is a judgment about the design, not a measurable 100% improvement. The title points to the Roma Spider, but the Roma has since been replaced by the Amalfi, including in Spider form.
Why the Roma Spider can look better with the roof down
The Roma Spider is the open-top counterpart to the Roma coupe. Top Gear describes it as classy and glamorous, and its reviewer’s specific verdict is that, roof down, the Spider “might even be prettier than the coupe.” The cautious “might” matters: the review supports a favorable opinion, not a consensus or an objective ranking. The same review also notes styling details it finds less successful.
Lowering the roof changes the Roma’s proportions and makes the cabin part of the car’s visible profile. Whether that improves the design depends on what you prefer: the coupe’s uninterrupted roofline or the Spider’s open-air silhouette. There is no named independent study or statistic measuring which version looks better.
What changes when the Roma becomes a Spider?
Fabric roof and open-air driving
The Spider uses a five-layer fabric roof. Ferrari specifies that it retracts in 13.5 seconds at speeds up to 60 km/h; Top Gear gives the limit as 37 mph. Ferrari describes the Roma Spider as an elegant 2+ mid-engined open-top car and says the soft top returns a solution to the marque’s range 54 years after the 365 GTS4, the last mid-front-engined Ferrari with a soft top. Ferrari’s Roma Spider Red Dot Awards document gives the roof-operation detail.

Weight and performance
Top Gear reports that the Spider is 84 kg heavier than the coupe. Separately, Ferrari lists a Spider dry weight of 1,556 kg with optional lightweight content; dry weight and the review’s coupe-to-Spider difference are distinct measurements and should not be treated as interchangeable. Ferrari’s technical sheet specifies a 3,855 cc twin-turbo V8 producing 620 cv and 760 Nm, paired with an eight-speed F1 DCT. Ferrari quotes 0–100 km/h in 3.4 seconds and a maximum speed above 320 km/h. Ferrari’s Roma Spider technical specifications provide the manufacturer figures.
Wind and rear-seat practicality
Top Gear says the integrated wind deflector reduces turbulence with the roof down. The rear seats, however, have extremely limited usefulness for passengers, according to the review. The Roma Spider’s open cabin is best understood as a front-seat-focused arrangement with occasional, constrained rear seating rather than a practical four-seat convertible. Top Gear’s 27 May 2025 review discusses the driving experience and cabin.

How much did the Spider cost compared with the coupe?
In Top Gear’s UK review published 27 May 2025, the Roma Spider started at £210,838—about £28,000 more than the coupe at that time. That is historical UK pricing, not a current price or a worldwide figure. The review’s premium was the cost of the open-top version in that market and period; it should not be carried forward as today’s comparison.

Ferrari’s Roma line has been replaced by the Amalfi, including an Amalfi Spider. Evo’s 22 April 2026 review describes the Amalfi as the Roma’s replacement. Auto Express’s 5 August 2026 UK review reports a price of £227,500 for the Amalfi Spider before options, with 631 bhp, 760 Nm, 0–62 mph in 3.3 seconds and a 199 mph top speed. Those are successor-model figures reported for the UK review, not Roma Spider specifications or a global price. Evo’s Roma review covers the replacement, while Auto Express’s Amalfi Spider review gives its UK context.
