Is the C5 Corvette Z06 Still a Bargain? Why Chevrolet’s First Modern Z06 Stands Out

The C5 Z06’s LS6, fixed-roof platform and performance hardware make it a compelling used Corvette—but “biggest bargain” depends on the car, its condition and the comparison.

The 2001–2004 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 makes a persuasive performance-for-money case: it paired a lightweight fixed-roof C5 platform with a high-output V8, a six-speed manual, dedicated suspension tuning and titanium exhaust. Calling it the “biggest Corvette bargain of 2025,” however, is an opinion—not a ranking established by comparable 2025 sales data. Its appeal is clearest when the price, condition and equipment of a specific car are weighed against what it delivers.

What makes the C5 Z06 a modern Z06?

The Z06 badge predates the C5. The 2001 model is better described as the badge’s return on a contemporary Corvette after the C4-era ZR-1. It was the high-performance, fixed-roof version of the C5, built around more than an engine upgrade.

Hagerty describes the C5’s transaxle layout and hydroformed frame rails as elements of its packaging and weight distribution. On the Z06, Chevrolet combined the LS6 V8 with stickier tires, a revised FE4 suspension developed with racing in mind, and a titanium exhaust. Hagerty’s generation overview identifies FE4 as the Z06’s sole suspension setup. Hagerty’s 2001 Z06 page and its C5 Corvette overview describe the model and its equipment.

That package is the heart of the bargain argument: the buyer gets a purpose-built performance Corvette rather than a base model with only a higher-output engine. On an older car, though, original equipment cannot be assumed; modifications and replacements may have changed what is actually fitted.

How the 2001 Z06 differs from 2002–2004

All four model years use a 5.7-liter aluminum LS6 V8, but output increased after the launch year. Road & Track’s buyer’s guide gives the launch-year car 385 horsepower and 385 lb-ft of torque, and 2002–2004 cars 405 horsepower and 400 lb-ft. Hagerty likewise lists 385 hp for 2001 and 405 hp from 2002 onward. Road & Track’s C5 buyer’s guide provides the torque figures.

Model year Engine Rated output Torque
2001 5.7-liter LS6 aluminum V8 385 hp (Hagerty; Road & Track) 385 lb-ft (Road & Track)
2002–2004 5.7-liter LS6 aluminum V8 405 hp (Hagerty; Road & Track) 400 lb-ft (Road & Track)

Those are model specifications, not proof that one year is the better buy. A later car’s higher rated output may matter to a buyer, but condition, service history, modifications and asking price can matter more when choosing between two used examples.

Why “biggest bargain of 2025” needs a qualification

“Bargain” is a judgment about performance relative to price, and the C5 Z06 makes a credible case on that measure. But no apples-to-apples dataset establishes it as the biggest-value Corvette across calendar 2025. Hagerty’s model-specific page carries a July 2026 Price Guide, including a 2001 Z06 valuation reference; that later guide is not a 2025 market ranking or a quote for every car. See the dated Hagerty valuation page for its guide information.

Use a guide value as a starting point, not a promise of what a particular car should cost. A meaningful comparison holds model year and condition grade as close as possible and accounts for mileage, location, history and modifications. A clean, documented car and a heavily modified or poorly maintained one are not equivalent just because they share a badge.

What to check before buying one

Before treating a low asking price as a bargain, establish what the car is and how it has been used. A specialist pre-purchase inspection is a sensible way to assess a particular older performance car; none of the published specifications or valuation guides substitutes for inspecting the individual example.

  • Confirm year and equipment: distinguish 2001’s 385-hp rating from the 405-hp rating for 2002–2004, and verify which suspension, exhaust and tire components remain on the car.
  • Review condition and records: look for maintenance documentation, accident history, modifications and evidence of track use. These factors can affect the car’s condition and value, but the cited sources do not quantify their individual price effects.
  • Compare like with like: use a dated guide value for the same model year and condition, while keeping mileage and geography as comparable as possible.
  • Check the VIN for recall status: do not infer whether a campaign applies or was completed from model year alone.

Check the electronic column lock campaign by VIN

GM Bulletin 04006B, issued in November 2004, describes an electronic column lock safety campaign covering specified Corvettes and VIN ranges. The listed groups include certain 1997–2004 manual-transmission cars, 1997–2000 automatic-transmission cars, and 2001–2004 automatic-transmission export cars. GM cautions that not every vehicle within the listed VIN breakpoints is necessarily involved. The correction also depended on configuration: U.S. and Canadian automatic cars had the lock plate removed; manual cars and export automatics received PCM reprogramming and clearance or lock-plate checks, with replacement as needed. GM Bulletin 04006B contains the campaign details.

For a specific car, enter its VIN in the NHTSA recall lookup and ask the seller for documentation showing any applicable work was completed. The bulletin’s year and transmission categories are a reason to check, not a substitute for the vehicle-specific result.

Who should consider a C5 Z06?

It suits a buyer who wants a focused, manual C5 and is comfortable evaluating an older performance car on its own condition and history. The Z06’s combination of engine, chassis tuning and weight-conscious equipment makes it compelling in principle; the actual bargain depends on the example and its price. A buyer prioritizing a newer car, an automatic transmission or a less specialized Corvette may find that the Z06’s particular appeal is not the right measure of value.
