The Chevrolet Traverse has three generations: the first spans model years 2009–2017, the second began with 2018, and the third launched as a ground-up redesign for 2024. The 2024 model year is a transition-year exception: some references include the carryover Traverse Limited with the second generation, while the redesigned Traverse belongs to the third.

First generation: 2009–2017
The Traverse debuted at the 2008 Chicago Auto Show and reached dealerships in October 2008 as a 2009 model, according to GM Authority. Its chronology describes a 3.6L V6, six-speed automatic, standard front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive.
2013 refresh
The 2013 model year brought a mid-cycle styling refresh, including revised front fascia and rear liftgate. That makes 2013 a useful visual checkpoint when identifying first-generation examples. The generation-level chronology does not establish every trim, calibration or equipment change for each year from 2009 to 2017.
Second generation: 2018–2023
The second-generation Traverse went on sale in July 2017 as a 2018 model. Chevrolet’s preliminary 2018 specifications listed a 3.6L V6 and an available 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder, with front-wheel drive and available all-wheel drive. See Chevrolet’s 2018 preliminary specifications.

What the 2023 model-year fact sheet establishes
For 2023, Chevrolet listed LS, LT Cloth, LT Leather, RS, Premier and High Country trims, with seating for up to eight. The manufacturer stated maximum cargo volume of 98.2 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. It also listed Chevy Safety Assist as standard across trims; infotainment equipment and functionality varied by trim and configuration. Why 2024 appears in two generations
The year label alone can be confusing. Cars.com places the second generation at 2018–2023, while GM Authority extends its chronology through 2024. Chevrolet, however, described the redesigned 2024 Traverse as all-new and redesigned from the ground up. Treat that redesigned vehicle as third generation; a carryover 2024 Traverse Limited may appear under the prior generation in some year lists.

Chevrolet’s July 17, 2023 launch announcement named LS, LT, Z71 and RS trims for the redesigned model, with a 2.5L turbocharged engine paired to an eight-speed automatic and available AWD. The Z71 was positioned as the off-road-capable trim, with a twin-clutch AWD system available for it. Chevrolet stated a maximum trailering rating of up to 5,000 pounds when properly equipped. Third generation: 2024–current
The 2024 redesign is the clear start of the third generation. Chevrolet’s current US page presents the 2027 Traverse and describes seating for up to eight depending on configuration, 98 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume, available AWD, and up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity for listed equipped configurations. These are current US-market manufacturer specifications and may vary by configuration; check the 2027 Traverse page for the exact vehicle.

How to compare a used Traverse across generations
Generation is a starting point, not a substitute for checking a particular vehicle. For a real comparison, use the trim and VIN-specific equipment rather than assuming a feature applies to every vehicle in a generation.
- Design and body configuration: Compare the vehicle’s exterior and cabin layout, particularly when distinguishing the redesigned 2024 model from a carryover Limited.
- Engine and transmission: Match the exact model year and trim; the cited generation-level information does not establish every annual specification.
- Drivetrain: Check whether the listing is front-wheel drive or AWD and, for the redesigned Z71, verify whether it has the available twin-clutch AWD system.
- Seating and cargo: Verify the actual configuration. Chevrolet’s published capacity figures are maximums, not a promise that every trim or seat arrangement has the same space.
- Safety and infotainment: Confirm specific equipment on the vehicle, since feature availability and functionality can vary by trim and configuration.
- Ownership records: Check model-year-specific warranty, recall and service history for the individual vehicle.
What this generation guide can—and cannot—tell you
The year ranges and major redesign checkpoints identify which generation a Traverse belongs to, but they are not an exhaustive annual change ledger. The cited information does not establish a reliable ranking of model years, a list of years to avoid, or every mechanical, safety and infotainment revision from 2009 through 2027. For a specific older vehicle, confirm its configuration with official brochures, its window sticker, owner documentation or VIN-specific records.
