No: Audi has not announced that the A6 is going away or becoming electric-only. The company has reversed its plan to use even- and odd-numbered model names to distinguish electric from combustion cars. Today, “A6” identifies a size and positioning family; labels such as TFSI, TDI, e-hybrid and e-tron identify the powertrain. Audi has announced combustion, plug-in hybrid and battery-electric A6s, though it has not given a global end date for combustion A6 production.
What Audi changed about the A6 name
On February 3, 2025, Audi said model numbers would indicate a vehicle’s size and position in the lineup, regardless of its drivetrain. That replaced the proposed odd/even distinction between combustion and electric models. Audi also said it would not retroactively rename models already on sale. (Audi, February 3, 2025.)
In practice, the number alone does not tell you whether an A6 is electric. The body-style name and powertrain badge do that work: TFSI and TDI designate gasoline and diesel versions, e-hybrid denotes a plug-in hybrid, and e-tron identifies a battery-electric model. These labels describe distinct vehicles, not necessarily one A6 converted from one powertrain to another.
Which A6 versions has Audi announced?
Audi has described three powertrain branches. Their body styles, specifications and availability vary by market, so a version announced in one country should not be assumed to be sold everywhere.

Combustion A6: gasoline and diesel
Audi called 2025 a renewal year for the A6 and Q3 and identified the A6 Avant as the first model in the new A6 family. In April 2025, it announced an A6 Sedan with gasoline and diesel engines and described the model as intended for worldwide sale. The release’s German specification included 2.0 TFSI and 2.0 TDI versions rated at 150 kW, plus a 3.0 TFSI quattro rated at 270 kW. Audi described mild-hybrid-plus technology for the diesel and V6 gasoline variants. Those specific engines and figures are tied to that announcement and should not be treated as the current lineup in every country. (Audi, March 18, 2025; Audi, April 15, 2025.)
In October 2026, Audi announced A6 allroad versions for Europe with a V6 TDI mild hybrid and, for the first time in the allroad, an e-hybrid plug-in hybrid. Audi said they were available at European dealerships. This is a regional announcement, not evidence that the same versions are available in every market. (Audi, October 2, 2026.)

A6 e-hybrid: plug-in electric driving with an engine
Audi announced A6 Sedan e-hybrid quattro and A6 Avant e-hybrid quattro in May 2025, each in two power levels. It stated an electric range of up to 106 km and a battery capacity of 25.9 kWh gross, or 20.7 kWh net. The range is Audi’s stated test-cycle figure, not a real-world guarantee. German orders opened May 8, 2025, with an initial launch planned for summer 2025; those dates do not establish availability elsewhere. (Audi, May 6, 2025.)
A6 e-tron: the battery-electric branch
Audi introduced the production A6 e-tron as a Sportback and Avant. For a specified version, Audi quoted up to 756 km of WLTP range. WLTP is a standardized test figure, not a guaranteed driving distance or a U.S. EPA rating. Audi’s announced specifications also include an 800-volt electrical system, DC charging up to 270 kW and a 10–80% charge time of 21 minutes at a suitable high-power charging station. It lists AC charging up to 11 kW at standard home chargers. These are manufacturer specifications; actual charging time and range depend on the vehicle version, equipment, charger and conditions. Audi’s original German launch prices were €75,600 for the A6 Sportback e-tron performance and €77,250 for the A6 Avant e-tron performance, with orders scheduled to open in September 2024. These are historical German launch prices, not current prices for other markets. The same caution applies to the €55,500 German starting price Audi announced for the 2025 A6 Sedan TFSI. Does this mean the combustion A6 will eventually end?
It may end at some point, but Audi’s reviewed announcements do not set a definitive global end date for combustion A6 production. The company has said production of its last combustion models will be managed in response to global market developments; that is not a specific A6 phase-out schedule. So the title’s “soon be dead” framing is not a confirmed discontinuation notice.

How to compare A6 versions as a buyer
Start with the exact vehicle rather than the A6 badge alone. A Sedan TFSI, an Avant e-hybrid and an A6 e-tron differ in powertrain and may differ in body style, equipment and market availability.

- Choose by driving pattern: a combustion mild hybrid uses liquid fuel; a plug-in hybrid can cover some trips electrically and relies on its engine for longer journeys; a battery-electric A6 depends on charging.
- Check the local lineup: Sedan, Avant, Sportback and allroad availability is not uniform across powertrains or countries. Audi has also identified the A6L e-tron as China-exclusive.
- Compare range on the same basis: keep the test cycle attached to any range figure, and do not treat a laboratory figure as a real-world guarantee.
- Verify charging details: charging capability, connector, local supply and equipment matter. For home charging, confirm the exact car and installation requirements rather than assuming any particular charger is compatible.
- Use current local pricing: check the relevant Audi market and model year; launch prices and ordering dates from Germany do not establish today’s price or availability elsewhere.
