What’s new for the 2027 Atlas?
The 2027 Atlas has a redesigned interior with more premium-feeling materials, updated technology, and a four-cylinder engine rated at 282 horsepower. The U.S. model is offered with front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD): FWD is standard, AWD is optional on lower trims, and AWD is standard on the upper SEL trims, according to Cars.com’s U.S. pricing and trim report. That differs from Volkswagen Canada’s description of its market’s lineup, so buyers should use U.S. specifications for U.S. vehicles.
Under the hood is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 282 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic, according to Volkswagen’s 2026 announcement of the 2027 Atlas. A hybrid is not described as a launch option; Cars.com reports Volkswagen expects one with a later mid-cycle refresh, but that is a reported plan, not a confirmed release date.
Four reasons the Atlas may suit your family
1. Room across all three rows
Car and Driver describes the Atlas as spacious in all three rows and says two adults can sit in the third row, although it is less roomy than the first and second rows. That makes the Atlas worth considering for families who regularly carry more than five people. Individual comfort and access still depend on passenger size and seating needs; the available coverage is not a substitute for trying your own family’s usual seating arrangement.

Car and Driver’s published cargo figures are manufacturer-provided, and the publication says it has not yet completed its carry-on luggage test. Treat the figures as specifications rather than an independent demonstration of how many bags will fit. Car and Driver’s 2027 Atlas review provides the related review details.
2. A more upscale-feeling cabin
Car and Driver and Cars.com both describe a more premium-feeling redesigned interior. Cars.com reports real-wood trim is standard and notes further material and comfort upgrades on higher trims. If the cabin is a deciding factor, compare the exact trim in person: the reported upgrades are not all standard across the range.

3. Useful standard technology
Cars.com lists the SE’s standard equipment as including a 12.9-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch instrument display, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual wireless phone chargers, and a nine-speaker audio system. Driver-assistance equipment and available larger displays vary by trim or package, so check the vehicle’s current window sticker rather than assuming every feature is included on the base SE.
4. A stated 5,000-pound maximum towing capacity
The U.S. sources state a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds. Volkswagen’s launch announcement specifies that capacity for models with a factory-installed hitch, while Car and Driver notes the hitch is optional. Before towing, confirm the exact vehicle’s hitch, payload, and trailer limits in its documentation; a maximum rating does not mean every Atlas configuration can tow that amount.

Three reasons to consider another SUV
1. The entry price is higher than several listed rivals
Cars.com lists U.S. Atlas prices including destination from $43,135 to $58,135. It also reports a starting-price increase of $2,350 over the 2026 Atlas. Its comparison shows lower listed starting prices for the Ford Explorer, Kia Telluride, and Hyundai Palisade, but those are source-time snapshots rather than a full like-for-like comparison of similarly equipped trims. Compare the features you actually want, not just the base price.
2. No hybrid is offered at launch
The reviewed lineup has no hybrid option. That matters if your priority is access to hybrid power rather than a roomy gas-powered SUV. Cars.com reports Volkswagen expects a hybrid with a later mid-cycle refresh; timing and availability are not established as a guarantee.

3. It is not among the quickest in its class
Car and Driver says the Atlas is not as quick as some competitors. In that publication’s instrumented test, an SEL Premium R-Line AWD reached 60 mph in 7.6 seconds; the review says the new Atlas was 0.4 second slower than the previous model despite its higher horsepower. Those are Car and Driver’s test results for that configuration, not a test of every trim or a CarCody measurement.

The EPA figures are reported by Cars.com; the table reflects its listed drivetrain estimates, not a promise of the mileage a particular driver will achieve. Cars.com says the Technology Package adds 20-inch wheels, upgraded lighting, a trailer hitch, remote start, and a 15-inch screen. Confirm current package contents and fitment for the specific vehicle, as equipment can change by trim and production.
How to decide whether it is the right three-row SUV
The Atlas makes the strongest case when you need a roomy third row and want an equipment-rich, gas-powered SUV with substantial stated towing capacity. Its weaker fit is for shoppers whose first priorities are a lower entry price, a hybrid powertrain, or quicker acceleration. Evaluate competing SUVs at comparable equipment levels; Cars.com and Car and Driver name the Explorer, Telluride, Palisade, Toyota Grand Highlander, Honda Pilot, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L among relevant comparisons, but the cited coverage does not establish a hands-on, like-for-like test of those rivals.
- Compare access to and usable space in the second and third rows with the passengers who will use them.
- Check the EPA fuel-economy estimate for the drivetrain and trim you want, and whether a hybrid alternative is available.
- Compare towing ratings alongside hitch configuration, payload, and the limits for the exact vehicle and trailer.
- Check which driver-assistance features are standard on each trim and what requires a package.
- Compare warranty and maintenance terms using current manufacturer information.
What is not yet established
The reviewed sources do not establish 2027 Atlas crash-test ratings. Car and Driver directs shoppers to NHTSA and IIHS for crash-test results. Volkswagen’s page identifying a 2026 Atlas as an IIHS Top Safety Pick applies to the 2026 model and should not be treated as a 2027 rating. Check the organizations’ current results for the exact model year.
Car and Driver also reports that its AWD Atlas achieved 30 mpg on its 75-mph real-world route, above the EPA estimate. That is one publication’s result under its test conditions, not a general fuel-economy guarantee. For manuals, maintenance schedules, warranty information, and accessories, Volkswagen’s owner-resources page provides 2027 Atlas links. Confirm details for the specific vehicle you are buying.
