Ferrari lists the V6 alone at 663 cv and its electric motor at up to 167 cv. Those are manufacturer figures, and they do not show that the car would perform better without its hybrid hardware.
Which Ferrari is the headline about?
It is the Ferrari 296 GTB, a mid-rear-engined, two-seat berlinetta unveiled on 24 June 2021. Ferrari describes it as a plug-in hybrid with a 120-degree V6 and rear-wheel drive. The “3.0” refers to the engine’s displacement; Ferrari’s launch release specifies 2,992 cm³.
Where do the power figures come from?
Ferrari’s 2021 launch release rates the V6 at 663 cv and the electric motor at up to 122 kW, or 167 cv. Ferrari gives the maximum combined hybrid-system output as 830 cv. The company’s release calls the engine a “new 663 cv 120° V6 coupled with an electric motor capable of delivering a further 122 kW (167 cv).” Ferrari’s 296 GTB launch announcement presents these as manufacturer specifications, not independent test results.
The headline’s “720 HP” figure is not explained by the Ferrari specifications cited here. Ferrari uses cv, the metric horsepower unit; cv and mechanical horsepower (hp) are not interchangeable labels. Without a source and a stated measurement basis for 720 hp, it should not be treated as the 296 GTB’s verified engine output or combined rating.

What does the electric hardware do?
The 296 GTB’s electric motor sits between the V6 and gearbox, where Ferrari identifies it as an MGU-K. Its role is not limited to adding a headline power number: Ferrari says it can provide torque and power, charge the high-voltage battery, start the V6 and drive the car by itself in eDrive mode. The battery capacity is listed as 7.45 kWh. These details are in Ferrari’s 296 GTB technical overview.
Ferrari characterizes this as its first rear-wheel-drive-only plug-in hybrid road-car architecture. The specifications establish what the system is designed to do; they do not quantify how much each function changes performance in a particular driving condition.

Would the 296 GTB do better without the hybrid system?
The available Ferrari figures cannot answer that counterfactual. They give ratings for the hybrid car, but do not provide a controlled comparison with an otherwise equivalent non-hybrid 296 GTB. Nor do they establish that removing the motor and battery would improve the car.
A meaningful comparison would need equivalent versions and evidence on more than engine output. Relevant measures include vehicle mass, acceleration or lap times under comparable conditions, and the driving experience. Without such a comparator, “does better without all the electric junk” is an opinion, not a conclusion supported by these specifications.
