No credible evidence in the sources reviewed supports a GM-produced 2025 Pontiac Firebird. The viral images and videos described in automotive reporting are AI-generated renderings, not evidence of a production car or an announcement by Pontiac or GM. Pontiac’s real Firebird ran from 1967 to 2002, and separate records about trademarks, social posts and a replica do not establish a 2025 comeback.
What the viral 2025 Firebird videos show
SlashGear’s January 6, 2025 fact-check reported that circulating videos used AI image-generation programs and that neither Pontiac nor GM had announced a new Firebird. It recommended checking video descriptions for terms such as “digitally generated” or “synthetic.” Visual glitches may offer clues, but they are not proof on their own. The videos should be treated as renderings unless a reliable production announcement supports them. SlashGear’s fact-check
That reporting is a finding about the videos and announcement status at the time; it is not itself a statement from GM. It also cannot rule out announcements made after January 2025. The conclusion here is limited to the sources and dates described below.
What Pontiac’s Firebird history actually is
GM says its Pontiac Firebird was produced from 1967 to 2002. The name also appeared earlier on GM’s distinct Firebird I, II and III turbine-powered concept cars from the 1950s. Those experimental concepts are not a 2025 model or evidence of a modern production car. GM says Firebird III’s greatest legacy was lending its name to the Pontiac pony cars that began in 1967. Why trademark filings do not prove a car is coming
GM Authority reported that two Firebird word-and-logo applications filed with the EUIPO on July 28, 2025, covered novelty signs made of metal, aluminum or wood—not automobiles. A trademark application for signs does not amount to an announcement of a new vehicle. GM Authority’s report on the Firebird filings
In separate reporting, GM Authority said 2025 USPTO applications for Pontiac’s name and arrowhead logo covered vehicle hub caps, horns and license plate frames. The outlet interpreted those applications as intellectual-property protection, not a vehicle relaunch. Neither set of filings establishes that a 2025 Firebird exists. What the NHTSA replica listing means
NHTSA’s database record, updated March 28, 2025, lists “Pontiac Motor Company” as a replica/final-stage vehicle manufacturer and shows an approved 1968 Pontiac Fire Bird two-door coupe replica. It is a replica listing, not a listing for a 2025 GM Firebird. The record displays a projected production start date of December 1, 2026—a future projection relative to the October 4, 2026 research date, not proof that production had started. It also does not establish that GM revived Pontiac. NHTSA’s Pontiac Motor Company manufacturer record
GM’s social posts were not launch announcements
GM Authority reported that a June 2025 Threads post joked, “Are people still hungry? Because we could eat a Pontiac,” and that an October 2025 social video joked about comments saying “bring back Pontiac.” Neither report identified the posts as an announcement of a new vehicle. GM Authority also reproduced GM’s clarification about a 2024 parody advertisement: “We understand the ad was a joke and it was not placed by GM or anyone affiliated with GM. We appreciate the passion for all our brands as well as a good sense of humor.” The statement concerned that parody ad; it is not a Firebird product announcement. - Production car: Look for a clear announcement from GM identifying the vehicle and its model year. A rendering or social joke is not that announcement.
- Digital concept: Check the creator’s description for disclosure that imagery is generated, synthetic or illustrative. A dramatic design image alone does not establish a manufacturer, production plan or model year.
- Historical Firebird: Confirm whether the source is discussing the 1967–2002 Pontiac production car or one of GM’s 1950s turbine concepts.
- Replica: Read the manufacturer and model-year details in the relevant government record. An approved replica of a 1968 Fire Bird is not a 2025 GM vehicle.
- Trademark or social post: Check the goods or services named in a filing and the full context of a post. Neither automatically signals a vehicle launch.
