In the 2027 Ram 1500, Stellantis rates the standard-output 3.0-liter Hurricane at 420 hp and 469 lb-ft, and the high-output version at 540 hp and 521 lb-ft. Those figures exceed some familiar V8 ratings, but the five engines implied by the headline are not identified in the available official-source comparisons. Here is what the published numbers establish—and what they do not.
Which Hurricane engine is being compared?
Stellantis introduced the 3.0-liter twin-turbo Hurricane inline-six in standard-output (SO) and high-output (HO) forms. Its March 2022 announcement described the SO as making more than 400 hp and 450 lb-ft, and the HO as making more than 500 hp and 475 lb-ft. Those were manufacturer-stated thresholds, not one universal rating across every vehicle application. Stellantis also claimed the engine could be up to 15% more efficient than larger engines; that is the automaker’s claim, not an independent fuel-economy finding. For a specific vehicle comparison, Stellantis Fleet’s 2027 Ram 1500 specifications list the SO at 420 hp and 469 lb-ft and the HO at 540 hp and 521 lb-ft. The same page rates the Ram’s 5.7-liter HEMI eTorque at 395 hp and 410 lb-ft. How do those ratings compare with documented V8s?
The table compares published ratings, not identical vehicles or controlled engine tests. The Ford figures are for 2026 Mustang configurations; the Chevrolet figures are crate-engine configurations. The Hurricane and HEMI figures are for the 2027 Ram 1500. Because application, model year, and configuration differ, horsepower and torque comparisons do not establish which vehicle is quicker or which engine is better overall.

Ford’s figures distinguish the Mustang GT from the Dark Horse and identify the GT’s available exhaust option as a separate rating. Chevrolet Performance’s LS3 page lists more than one configuration, so “LS3” alone does not specify one output. Crate-engine ratings also should not be treated as factory-installed vehicle ratings. Which V8 comparisons are supported?
Against the 2026 Mustang GT V8
In rated horsepower, the 2027 Ram 1500 Hurricane SO (420 hp) is below the 2026 Mustang GT’s 480-hp rating, while the Hurricane HO (540 hp) is above it. The Mustang GT’s available active valve performance exhaust raises its published rating to 486 hp, which remains below the Ram HO figure. Torque tells a different part of the story: both Ram Hurricane ratings are higher than the Mustang GT’s stated 415 or 418 lb-ft, but those numbers still describe engines in different vehicle applications.

Against the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse V8
The Ram HO’s 540 hp exceeds the 2026 Mustang Dark Horse’s listed 500 hp; the Ram SO’s 420 hp does not. The Ram Hurricane ratings—both 469 and 521 lb-ft—are higher than the Dark Horse’s 418 lb-ft rating. This is a comparison of published engine ratings, not acceleration or performance in a matched test.
Against Chevrolet Performance LS3-family crate engines
The Ram HO’s 540 hp is higher than the listed LS3 configuration at 533 hp and the LS376/525 at 525 hp. The SO’s 420 hp is lower than both. Torque does not follow the same pattern: the LS3 configuration at 477 lb-ft is above the Hurricane SO’s 469 lb-ft, but below the HO’s 521 lb-ft; the LS376/525’s 486 lb-ft is above the SO and below the HO. Against the Ram 5.7-liter HEMI
Within the 2027 Ram 1500 figures, both Hurricane versions are rated above the 5.7L HEMI eTorque in horsepower and torque: 420/469 and 540/521 versus 395/410. In a separate 2026 Ram announcement, Stellantis gives the returning 5.7-liter HEMI 395 hp and 555 Nm (about 410 lb-ft), and describes the Hurricane as offering up to 540 hp and 706 Nm (about 521 lb-ft). Does more horsepower mean a faster vehicle?
No. Horsepower and torque are engine ratings; acceleration is a vehicle outcome affected by the whole configuration. Stellantis’ Dodge announcement offers a useful example of a like-brand, manufacturer-reported vehicle comparison: the Charger R/T SIXPACK is rated at 420 hp and 468 lb-ft, versus 370 hp and 395 lb-ft for the 5.7L HEMI Charger R/T. Stellantis reports 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds for the SIXPACK and 5.1 seconds for the HEMI, with quarter-mile times of 12.9 and 13.5 seconds, respectively. What the headline’s five-engine claim can—and cannot—prove
The published numbers support a narrower conclusion: the Ram 1500 Hurricane HO is rated higher in horsepower than the cited Mustang GT, Mustang Dark Horse, and two Chevrolet Performance crate-engine configurations. The SO is not higher in horsepower than those cited V8s. Neither conclusion verifies the headline’s specific list of five iconic V8s, because that list is not identified in the available source material. A defensible five-engine claim would need to name each exact V8 configuration, match it against a stated Hurricane version and application, and keep factory-vehicle figures separate from crate-engine ratings.
Stellantis itself frames the Hurricane and HEMI as different choices rather than reducing the question to peak output.
