Nissan executives have expressed interest in bringing back the Silvia name, but Nissan has not confirmed an approved next-generation Silvia/200SX program. Their comments describe an idea the company would like to make work—not a car with a production start or launch date.
What Nissan has said about a new Silvia
In April 2026, Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa told The Drive that sports cars are central to the company and that more sports cars would join its portfolio. Asked whether the Silvia could fit Nissan’s future plans, he replied, “…it would, if I could, soon, you know.” He also stressed that Nissan had to proceed prudently and step by step.
Richard Candler, Nissan’s global corporate product strategy chief, told The Drive that the company was looking closely at its sports-car lineup again and would like to bring back the Silvia nameplate. He said Nissan still needed to find the right price accessibility and product positioning.
Those are statements of interest, not confirmation of a development or production program. Espinosa made that distinction explicit in an interview with Edmunds: describing a hypothetical affordable sports car, he said he might choose “a Silvia — a real affordable sports car” rather than a sporty Sentra, then added, “I’m not saying I will do it.”

Is there a launch date or confirmed specification?
No. The interviews do not establish production approval, a launch date, a price, a body style, a powertrain, or which markets would receive a new car. Nissan has not said whether a future model would be called Silvia, 200SX, or something else in any particular market.
Nissan’s North American product announcement covers other products and technologies but does not announce a Silvia/200SX. That omission is not proof that Nissan has no internal study; it means there is no public confirmation in that announcement.

Why a revival is still difficult
It has to make business sense
In a 2024 interview with Top Gear, Espinosa said the chances existed but that a niche sports car had to be an interesting proposal for the company. He also described the need for a globally workable idea, because a small audience makes this kind of project difficult. Candler’s later comments point to the same practical test: Nissan needs a viable price and a clear place for the car in its lineup.
Modern safety and regulations shape the car
A 2025 CarExpert report on a translated interview with Espinosa cited current regulations and crash-safety performance as obstacles to recreating an especially lightweight chassis. That does not rule out a new sports car, but it cautions against assuming a revival could simply reproduce the formula or construction of an older Silvia.

What “Silvia” and “200SX” mean across markets
The names have varied by market. Edmunds describes the Silvia as a compact coupe sold in Japan and says it was exported to the United States under the 200SX name. CarExpert notes that in Australia the Silvia was sold as the Gazelle and 200SX. Those histories do not establish which badge Nissan would choose for a future model—or that every car sold as a 200SX was the same Silvia generation.
How to read comparisons with other affordable sports cars
Edmunds names the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Subaru BRZ, and Toyota GR86 as reference points for the hypothetical affordable-sports-car slot. These are editorial comparisons, not Nissan-confirmed rivals. Nissan has not supplied specifications for a future Silvia that would allow a meaningful comparison of price, body style, powertrain, weight, driving layout, or market availability.

Silvia products available to enthusiasts now
While no next-generation road car has been announced, collectors can find products based on historic S15 Silvias. Aoshima lists a 1/24 Nissan S15 Silvia spec-R ’99 plastic assembly kit, released in November 2025. Mattel documents a 1:64 Hot Wheels Car Culture LB-Super Silhouette S15 for 2026 and a Fast & Furious S15 product for 2024. These are model and die-cast products, not previews or evidence of a new Nissan car; retailer stock and availability can vary.
