The headline refers to a 2023 announcement, not Ford’s current full set of U.S. options.
What the 2023 headline meant
Engadget’s August 14, 2023 headline, “Ford’s advanced BlueCruise driver assist features will only be available as a subscription,” described Ford expanding BlueCruise availability and offering customers a way to activate the feature later through monthly or annual subscriptions. The same report also said buyers could purchase it when buying the vehicle. The headline therefore did not mean subscriptions were the only route, even at the time.
For that 2023 offer, Engadget reported prices of $75 per month, $800 per year, or $2,100 for three years. Those are historical figures from the article, not Ford’s current listed U.S. prices.
Ford BlueCruise prices and options in the U.S.
Ford’s U.S. BlueCruise page, checked October 8, 2026, lists these options. Ford says prices are subject to change, so confirm the current terms before buying.

Which option may suit you?
- Choose monthly access if you want to pay as you use the feature or expect to use it for a shorter period.
- Compare the annual plan with the monthly cost if you expect to use BlueCruise for much of the year. At the listed U.S. prices, 12 monthly payments would total $599.88, compared with $495 for the annual plan; Ford’s page does not establish whether the annual plan renews automatically or what cancellation terms apply.
- Consider the one-time purchase only if you are buying an eligible vehicle from a Ford dealer and prefer a single listed payment to a recurring plan. Ford’s current page limits this option to the vehicle-purchase transaction.
Ford’s page does not establish whether a purchase or subscription can be transferred between vehicles, so do not assume access follows you to another car.

BlueCruise is driver assistance, not autonomous driving
Ford describes BlueCruise as hands-free highway driving on designated Blue Zones, adding hands-free driving to Adaptive Cruise Control. “Hands-free” does not mean the driver can stop paying attention. Ford states: “BlueCruise is not full self-driving technology. Drivers must keep their eyes on the road and be ready to take control of the wheel.”

Engadget reported that Ford expected BlueCruise to be installed on 500,000 vehicles in North America for the 2024 model year, compared with 225,000 then installed. Those were historical figures attributed to Ford in 2023—a projected model-year count and a then-current installed count—not current fleet totals.

The article also quoted Ford’s internal comparison saying BlueCruise 1.3 stayed engaged in hands-free mode for an average of 5X longer than version 1.0. That was an automaker-reported internal test comparison, not an independently verified real-world result.
